World Cultures took over the SHS Commons during the morning and afternoon on April 13th as they presented a Renaissance Faire. A Renaissance faire is usually an outdoor weekend gathering, which purportedly recreates a historical setting for the amusement of its guests.

The students were each assigned a specific country with the time period from 1400-1800. Students presented information by sharing foods, games and role play. Their goal was to research and teach others about the time period and their country.

All students did a fantastic job and had lots of fun. Faculty, staff and students from other classes came by to sample the fares of each country and enjoy the different cultures.

What’s more fun than drawing graphs for AP Macroeconomics? Drawing graphs for AP Macroeconomics outside, on a beautiful Spring day, with sidewalk chalk.

Today, Mr. Sims’ AP Macroeconomics classes took advantage of the weather to practice drawing Foreign Exchange graphs (and perhaps burn some senior angst) during third and sixth periods.

The change of scenery seemed to help. More than one student was overheard saying that it all seemed to somehow make more sense today. “It felt like I understood it better,” said Taylor Funk and Katelyn Weir added, “Hey, I got it today!”

Getting outside for a few minutes to enjoy the sunshine and warm temperatures is rarely a bad thing. Kelsey Barrett summed up the feelings of her class. “It was nice to get outside for a while!”

On Thursday and Friday, April 20th and 21st, the Winter Percussion will travel to Dayton, Ohio to compete in the Winter Guard International Percussion World Championships! This will mark the 4th straight year that Scottsburg has made the trip to Dayton to compete. Competing in the Concert Class division, Scottsburg will compete in class prelims on Thursday, April 20th at 11:05 am at the University of Dayton Arena.

The Band of warriors will be competing against 13 other groups from different parts of the country, with groups coming as far as California! Should the group place in the Top 7, they will advance to Finals Competition held the next evening. Scottsburg last advanced to the finals round in 2014 and look to make a return trip this year.

To help wish the ensemble off to Dayton, there will be a Community Performance on Wednesday, April 19th, at 5:00 pm here at SHS in McClain Hall. In addition to the Winter Percussion performing, all three Winter Guards associated with the Band of Warriors will be performing their winter shows, including our 2017 Undefeated Tri-State Marching Arts Circuit Gold Medalist Middle School Winter Guard. Admission to the Community Performance is free, and there will be a bake sale benefiting the Scottsburg Band Parent Association!

After Prom tickets will be available for purchase during lunch to Seniors and Juniors only Monday-Wednesday, April 17-19 and Thursday-Friday, May 4-5.

Tickets are $10.00 each. Tickets for guest students from another school must be purchased with that student's photo ID (driver's license or student ID) or a copy of the same by a Scottsburg High School Senior or Junior.

The Scottsburg High School Drama Club will be performing The Canterbury Tales, adapted by Lindsay Price, at 6:30 p.m. April 29 and at 2:30 p.m. April 30 in McClain Hall. Tickets are $5 and will be available for purchase at the door or through a member of the SHS Drama Club.

In this adapted version for the stage, The Canterbury Tales tells how a group of pilgrims travel from London to Canterbury to visit the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket. Along the way, the pilgrims have a story-telling contest to see who has the best tale. The original literary classic was written by Geoffrey Chaucer during the Middle Ages.
