Mr. Kirschenbaum, ELA
This week, students will finish reading Inside Out & Back Again, and begin to consider whether the United States lives up to is promise as stated in “The New Colossus.” Students resume ReadingPlus homework this week. The May Independent Reading task is posted on CANVAS. If students did not complete the IOBA - Part 3 Summary Collection and the 3 IOBA Graphic Novel Poems, they should complete them over the weekend and turn them in on Wednesday, May 15. A copy of the text is available on SORA (Clever) and CANVAS.
Mr. O'Malley, Math 6 and 7
Thanks for the hard work on the Math and ELA CAPE tests! :)
Ms. Wesselhoft, Geography
We closed out the week with students creating their Own Economic Systems. They got to decide on their transportation, business, public services, and environmental policies. They named their countries and designed their own flag!
This week, we will begin a project, not a new unit. We will start our International Museum projects. Students will be tasked with creating an “artifact” (project) to showcase a topic of their choosing, highlighting something about Ireland (our team's name). We will begin with some brainstorming in class. They will be given expectations and guidance about research, notes and their annotated bibliographies. They will gather their own materials and be given time IN and OUT of class to complete the steps of this project.
The final project will be due Wednesday, May 22nd. I WILL TEACH/GUIDE/CHECK-IN, BUT IT IS IMPORTANT THAT STUDENTS PAY ATTENTION TO THEIR DEADLINES AND EXPECTATIONS AS THEY WILL NEED TO SELF PACE AND SELF REGULATE THEIR TIME.
On May 24th, our Geography classroom will have been transformed into the Museum of Ireland. Student work will be on display and viewed by school staff, other 6th grade teams, and open to families after school for you to see your students work on display.
Ms. Osman, Science
We made it through the first week of DC CAPE, scientists! This past week we studied new roots, took our Weather + Water summative, and closed out our Weather + Water unit with forecasting. We also began our new unit - Unit 6: Climate and Human Impact! This unit discusses a range of topics such as climate change, climate mitigation, and green technology.
For the week prior to Mothers' Day, we will continue our CAPE schedule for Monday-Wednesday and will get further into our introduction of Unit 6: Climate and Human Impact. This will put students in the proper mindset to begin our Space Trash Collection Project on Monday, May 13th.

On Friday we will have our Roots quiz for Week 5! Make sure to review throughout the week.
As a side note, please make sure your student has pencils to use. Also remind your student that writing on desks and/or chairs is not acceptable nor is leaving trash.
We are almost out of cups. If you decide to donate to the cause, please go with paper in the 8-12 oz size.
Ms. Patsalos, Intermediate ESOL
Students will use guided notes to demonstrate comprehension as they finish up The Crossover this week. The following week, we will resume System 44 lessons and independent reading.
Ms. Garcia, Beginner ELA and Geography
Welcome to week 2 of DC CAPE testing! This week, students will test in the mornings for English Language Arts and Science. Many of our ELA for MLL Beginners will not take the English test and I will be hosting a 3-day making workshop for them while the rest of the school tests. Hopefully they will really enjoy the time spent working on our creative skills. During the afternoons, students will receive 3 ELA classes next week and we will continue engaging in close readings of Greek myths. Students will have a Myths, Legends, and Fables exam on May 29-30.
In World Geography for English Beginners, students have been learning a lot about the theory of evolution and natural selection. We completed an interesting lab last week where students tested out different types of bird beaks to see which beak would best help a species survive over time. Next week, students will receive 2 World Geography classes and we are going to spend the time learning about the Out of Africa theory that explains that all modern humans on our planet descend from 1 common ancestor in Africa. This will be a fun topic that will transition into an inquiry into the concept of race in the weeks that follow.
Students in Beginning Literacy have been reinforcing their phonetic skills through an examination of vowel blends that make long vowel sounds, like –ea or –oa. Please note that we have taken a hiatus on using System 44 since we do not have access to school computers until May 10th. Students will continue working on their independent reading next week and we will also transition into learning 10 sight words a week until the end of this school year. They will be tested on these sight words on June 4th.
