FROM OUR ADMINISTRATOR
February is here, and with it, an abundance of snow! Just when we think we’ve seen the last of it, more keeps falling—much like God’s love, covering us in ways we don’t always expect but always need.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve had several moments of reflection, seeing our mission in action. At HLCS, we are preparing the next generation of leaders for Christ, and what a joy it has been to witness that firsthand. One of those moments came as I watched our students bring Beauty and the Beast to life on stage. Each character shined in a unique way, and it was incredible to see their hard work, dedication, and creativity come together. While we will certainly miss the senior leadership in drama, the future is bright, and we look forward to seeing the next generation step up.
Another highlight has been elementary basketball. With our fourth of five Saturday game days now behind us, over 45 young athletes in 3rd-6th grade have taken to the court. The gym has been buzzing with energy—not just from the players but also from our high school volunteers who referee, keep score, and cheer on the littles. It’s a beautiful thing to witness. This past weekend, while many of our high schoolers were away at Spring Hill, alumni stepped in to pour into our students, creating a full-circle moment. Watching them play, encourage, and invest in the younger players was a reminder of the lasting impact of our Christ-centered community. “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
My final reflection is one of deep gratitude for our student council chaplain, Vaughn Henegan. Last week, Vaughn led his last chapel as HLCS Chaplain after three years of faithful service. Each message he has shared has been rooted in truth, delivered with wisdom, and filled with a deepening understanding of scripture. It was fun to watch his growth on display over the last three years, as well as see a student embodying what it means to be a next-generation leader for Christ. Vaughn and the senior class members have impacted HLCS in many significant ways, and I am so thankful for their leadership this year.
Thank you for being part of this incredible community. If you aren’t busy on March 8th, we would love to see you come out and support HLCS at the upcoming Jubilee. It is a night of celebration and raising support for this incredible ministry.
May we continue to reflect Christ in all we do—through the snow, the stage, the gym, and beyond!

Senior Chaplain
Vaughn has been the HLCS student chaplain for the last three years. He is graduating this year and led his last chapel this month.
Heidi Hewitt has Joined the School Board
Heidi was born and raised in Madison, Indiana, where she developed a strong passion for athletics. Throughout her junior and high school years, she played volleyball, basketball, tennis, softball, and ran track. Continuing her athletic journey into college, she attended Taylor University, where she played basketball, softball, and volleyball. She also had the opportunity to travel to Japan with Athletes in Action for volleyball. Along with her athletic pursuits, Heidi earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education (K-8) with a minor in Special Education.
It was at Taylor University that she met her husband, Clark, and together they moved to
Petoskey. Heidi and Clark both believed God had called them to be missionaries, but little did
they know their mission field would be in his hometown. In 1985, she became the first teacher
hired at Harbor Light Christian School (HLCS) teaching K4, K5, 1st, and 2nd grades. That same
year, she and Clark were married, and they began an incredible journey of serving together.
Throughout her career at HLCS, Heidi taught various elementary grade levels, served as the
elementary PE teacher, Elementary Coordinator, and also coached volleyball for 23 years.
Heidi’s heart for Christian education and athletics has always been focused on HLCS, but in
2014 she and Clark stepped away to give full time care to Clark’s mom who had Alzheimer’s
Dementia.
All three of their children—Hannah, Kaylee, and Collin—graduated from HLCS, and now they
are proud grandparents and three of their grandchildren are currently attending the school. Heidi
is excited to see this generational growth and the Christian values they helped build continuing
within her family.
Now, as a board member at HLCS, Heidi will bring her deep history with the school and passion
for education and athletics to help continue its legacy of growing in wisdom in raising next
generation leaders for Christ.
Senior Family Spotlight
Bible Class Spotlight
3rd Grade - The Pilgrim's Progress
The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan is a classic Christian allegory, the children's version simplifies the language and story while keeping the core themes intact. The children's adaptation breaks down Christian’s journey, making it easier to understand while emphasizing its moral and spiritual lessons. We do a four-week study breaking down and dissecting a different part of his journey each day, watching a short clip from the movie and then answering short questions about the meaning and how it can relate to our own lives. We then have a whole class discussion, which is where you see the real magic happens. When they share their interpretations and explore different possible meanings and ideas, they are building knowledge that will continue to grow as they move in their walk with Jesus.
To end our unit the class worked in groups to create their own version of the map that documents Christians journey from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City.
9th Grade - 4 "Ps"
This semester the 9 th grade Bible class is studying the “4 Ps “. Proverbs, Psalms, Prophets and Pilgrim’s Progress.
Proverbs can give us word pictures for our lives. The students have chosen some of the proverbs to be drawn on posters, so we can all learn their meaning. The posters will be put up on the hallway bulletin board for all to see.
When the students study Psalms they will be memorizing some of them and looking for hidden gems in the book. They will be looking for the Star of David, the first 5 books of the Bible, acrostics, and other symbolism hidden in the book.
The students will also be studying a prophet of their choice and writing a paper about them this quarter.
Pilgrims’ Progress and the Bible have sold more copies than any other books in this world. The students will read the book titled Pilgrim’s Progress and then spend time discussing the characters in the book and the meaning for their own lives.
As you can see, it is a busy quarter with lots of learning, but these 9th graders are up to the challenge.
