KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES
It was great to see the students back to finish out this quick week. The staff enjoyed a little break, too, and then returned on Wednesday to participate in various job-related professional development. Thank you so much to our Northwood Foundation for arranging for the courtyard to be weeded, trees trimmed, new greenery planted and the bridge repainted. The space looks absolutely beautiful and it is the perfect time for classes to enjoy some time out there in that space. We could not maintain it without the help of the Foundation, we are so grateful and appreciative!
As you may have seen on Fulton County social media platforms, we are currently in the window for our student, staff, and family annual perception survey. What is new this year is that Northwood has included a parent satisfaction component in our new strategic action plan, so we will need your support as part of being able to accurately measure how we are doing. Please take a moment to review the information below and take a few minutes to complete the survey. Our local school governance council and I will be sending lots of additional reminders as well. Last year we only had 16% of families take the survey and we’re striving for 50% this year.
With gratitude,
Heather Rucker, principal

Dear Parent/Guardian,
At Fulton County Schools, we truly value the feedback from our parents about their experiences with the district. That is why I encourage all parents to take the Annual Parent Perception Survey. This survey allows parents the opportunity to tell us what they think about their student’s schools and the district. While we always make it a priority to listen to our parents, this survey affords us another opportunity to receive your thoughts and opinions.
The survey is anonymous and confidential. Please complete one survey per school where you have one or more students enrolled. The survey will remain open from Wednesday, October 16 through Friday, November 22.
It’s not only parents we want to hear from. Our students’ opinions are important too! Students in grades 3-12 will be provided with the opportunity to take the Annual Student Perception Survey between October 17 and November 22, during the school day. In our ongoing efforts to remain transparent with parents, please take a moment to review the 3-5 student survey and/or the 6-12 Student Survey.

NORTHWOOD'S FUN RUN: BOOSTERTHON IS BACK!
The Northwood Explorers Fun Run fundraiser has officially kicked off! Now is a great time to set up your child’s fun run account. The official first day of fundraising will be Thursday, October 24th, and the fun run will be held on Friday, November 1st. Our goal this year is $40,000. These funds enrich the student’s learning experience at Northwood by providing teacher grants, offsetting field trip costs, providing curriculum supplements, and funding school beautification projects.
To get started, please sign up on MyBooster.com. We encourage all parents to participate through signing up at MyBooster.com, sharing about our fundraiser with family and friends, and by making a donation if you’re able. All students who are registered on MyBooster.com (this is free) will be able to wear pajamas to school on Friday, October 25th.
Also, you can follow the Northwood Foundation on social media by liking Northwood Foundation on Facebook and following NorthwoodFoundationGA on Instagram.
PJ DAY FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25TH FOR ALL STUDENTS WHO ARE REGISTERED ON MYBOOSTER.COM!!!
ATTENDANCE MATTERS AT NORTHWOOD
Remember, your involvement as parents and guardians is an essential factor in creating a positive and engaging school environment. Together, we can foster an atmosphere where students are excited to come to school, engage in learning, and build a foundation for a successful future.
Here is you’re “A+ Attendance Advantage” for October:
Interaction and Engagement: Being present in class enables students to actively participate in discussions, ask questions, and engage with their peers. This interaction fosters critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively.
Some absences are unavoidable. If your Explorer is absent from school, please email northwoodattendance@fultonschools.org within 5 days of returning to school.
Did you know? Northwood ES has a process for Pre-Approved Absences for family events and special family circumstances, as well as, utilizing Participate Remote Learning Days, where your student may receive attendance credit through remote participation. Click here to learn how.
More FCS attendance policy information can be found at FCS Attendance Matters Website or by contacting our school social worker, Patrick Hartigan, MSW at hartigan@fultonschools.org
NON-ACADEMIC SKILLS TO SHOW ON REPORT CARDS
Fulton County is now requiring teachers to include comment codes for four areas of non-academic skills: self-direction, collaboration, problem solving, and work habits. These scores do not affect the student average for the class.
Please know that a "C" code on this is not a "C" grade but rather stands for "Consistently" which is good. Other codes include "O" = Often, "S" = Sometimes, and "R" = Rarely. You should expect to see these marks across your child's classes.
First quarter grades will be visible in the Parent Portal on October 18, 2024. Please see more information in the graphic below describing the skills.
CLINIC NEEDS AND NEWS
Clothing Donations
Accidents happen - in the classroom, at recess, at lunch or the bathroom. When our Explorers get messy they often head to the Clinic to get cleaned up. We keep extra clothes on hand for those quick changes and appreciate donations of all clothing sizes. If you have any clothing items you'd like to contribute you can send them in with your student or drop them off at the front desk.24-Hour Rule
As we are moving into the season for several viral illnesses like the flu, RSV, and COVID-19, we would like to remind you to keep your students home if they have symptoms like sore throat, runny nose, cough and congestion, fever and chills, vomiting, and diarrhea. Students may return to school after their symptoms have improved and they have been fever free without medicine for 24 hours. The 24-hour rule also applies to vomiting and diarrhea.
NORTHWOOD PINK OUT: TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22

Fall Picture Retake Day is November 11th. If you are not happy with your Explorer's portraits simply have your student return their original picture package to the photographer on retake day and they will replace the set at no additional cost. Don't forget to tell them to smile!
ART TO REMEMBER FUNDRAISER
Northwood artists have been working on their artwork for our Art to Remember fundraiser! You will have the opportunity to purchase a variety of products featuring your child’s artwork like magnets, mugs, keychains, and more! There are over 60 products, and many are less than $15. These make great gifts, and a percentage of every purchase goes right back to our school. Be on the lookout for an order form sent home with your child or click on this link to search for your child's artwork.
THINK FIRST & STAY SAFE PROGRAM
We all share a common and critical goal for our children to be safe and protected from all things harmful. In support of this goal, elementary students in Fulton County Schools will soon receive annual lessons designed to increase their personal safety & protection.
The Think First & Stay Safe™ program is a research-based program that teaches specific personal safety education by way of interactive classroom lessons, classroom posters, role-plays and corresponding activities. Think First & Stay Safe™ enables students to take an active and necessary role in protecting themselves from harassment, abduction, bullying, exploitation, and various forms of abuse (physical, sexual, emotional). The Health Advisory Committee reviewed and approved this program and selected components will be implemented as part of the elementary curriculum.
Grades 1, 3, and 5, please click the link below to read the Vision and Hearing Parent Letter. Thanks!
