The following are bulleted highlights from the first literacy committee meeting on 11/7/24:

• Our district needs to adopt a new core tier I comprehensive literacy curriculum
• Only K-5 curricula is being considered at this time as it is the only curricula that has been vetted by MDE to align with READ Act Science of Reading requirements.
• We will be bringing 3, knowledge building curricula forward to the committee to vet
• 2 of the 3 are fully approved by MDE/READ Act
• 1 is currently under re-review and is being adopted across other districts in MN and across the country with similar READ act requirements in place.
• In addition, we will be bringing 3 foundational skills curricula forward to the committee to vet
• All 3 are fully approved by MDE/READ Act
• Previous literacy committees expressed an interest in having a district specific rubric to use for vetting READ Act approved curricula that includes priorities identified by our K-5 teachers including (but not limited to):
• Read Aloud (K-5)
• Comprehensive and ongoing training and PD
• Physical Books (not just online resources/materials)
• Formative & Summative Assessments
• Alignment with district priorities
• Equity & Inclusion

The Letterland curriculum is not approved by MDE/READ Act; it will be discontinuing. The timeline for phasing this curriculum out will be determined and is contingent upon adoption and subsequent professional development for a replacement curriculum. Please be kind to your committee representatives; reconsidering the discontinuation of this curriculum was not (nor will be) an available decision for the literacy adoption committee.
