Principal's Message
Aloha,
We are celebrating Red Ribbon Week! Red Ribbon Week is a national campaign dedicated to promoting healthy choices for children. It encourages students to make positive life choices, while schools unite to raise awareness about the dangers of drug use. Our message focuses on making healthy choices. This week offers a great opportunity for families to talk openly about making safe, healthy decisions and standing up to peer pressure. See below for the Spirit Days we have planned this week in celebration.

Halloween Costume Parade
On Thursday, October 31 we are having a Halloween Costume Parade. All of our students meet on the playground at 8:15 AM and each class walks one loop around in the parade. Parents are invited to watch!
Students may wear their costumes to school. Please consider school appropriate costumes (no fake weapons or excessive gore). If their costume will be a distraction to wear all day, send them with something to change into after the parade.
Students may participate in the parade even if they do not wear their costumes. If you wish to not have your child participate due to personal beliefs, we will have an alternate activity available to them with a teacher.

Procedures for a Safe Parking Lot
We kindly ask for your cooperation in ensuring the safety and smooth operation of our school parking lot. To help us maintain a safe and efficient environment for everyone, please take note of the following reminders:
Drop-Off Lane: Please do not park or leave your car unattended in the drop-off lane. This area is designated for quick drop-offs, and leaving your vehicle can cause delays and safety concerns.
Curbside Stopping: Avoid stopping along the red curb, as it can create traffic blockages and unsafe conditions for students and other vehicles.
Kindness and Patience: Our staff members are working hard to keep everyone safe. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as they manage traffic and ensure the safety of all students.
Thank you for your attention to these important guidelines. By working together, we can create a safe and smooth experience for everyone.

Student Safety and Cell Phones
Dear Parents,
While cell phones can be great tools for communication and learning, it is important for us as parents to ensure our children are using them safely and appropriately. Problems with inappropriate group chats and texting can roll over from home to school, and we have already encountered some issues from cell phone use at home among students. Additionally, some students are sending texts in the middle of the night.
Here are a few steps you can take to monitor your child's cell phone use and help avoid inappropriate group chats:
1. Open Communication
- Talk to your child regularly about their phone use. Discuss the importance of online safety and responsible communication. Encourage them to come to you if they encounter anything inappropriate or feel uncomfortable.
2. Set Boundaries and Expectations
- Establish rules around phone use, including time limits and appropriate behavior online. Make sure they understand what kinds of messages and conversations are off-limits, especially in group chats. Many of our students are engaged in group chats after 10:00 PM.
3. Review Group Chats
- Ask your child to periodically show you the group chats they're part of. You can also discuss the risks of being involved in group chats where inappropriate language, bullying, or harmful content might be shared. Encourage them to exit any chat that feels unsafe.
4. Parental Control Apps
- Consider installing a parental control app that allows you to monitor their messages, apps, and screen time. There are apps available that can alert you if inappropriate content is shared.
5. Check Privacy Settings
- Review the privacy settings on your child's phone and apps to limit exposure to strangers or inappropriate content. Make sure their social media profiles are private, and restrict who can contact them.
6. Random Phone Check-Ins
- Do occasional, random checks of your child’s phone. While respecting their privacy is important, being upfront about regular checks helps reinforce that their phone use is a shared responsibility.
7. Encourage Positive Online Behavior
- Teach your child how to be a good digital citizen. Encourage them to only participate in respectful and uplifting conversations, and to report or block anyone who makes them uncomfortable.
Your active involvement in your child's digital life is crucial to keeping them safe online. By having regular conversations and taking proactive steps, we can guide them towards responsible and healthy phone use.

Parking Lot Safety Is Everyone's Responsibility
I want to emphasize the importance of driving safely in our school's parking lot. Our parking lot is a shared space where pedestrians and vehicles must coexist safely. Please drive slowly - no more than 5 MPH.
Be vigilant for pedestrians at all times. Avoid distractions like texting or phone calls while driving, and always yield the right of way to pedestrians.
In addition, PLEASE DO NOT EXIT YOUR CAR IN THE DRIVE THROUGH PICK UP LANE. Please pull all the way forward. If you need to exit your car, please park in an appropriate parking stall. This will help the traffic flow smoothly.
Let's work together to ensure that our parking lot remains a safe environment for everyone. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports is a proactive approach to behavior management in schools and other settings. PBIS emphasizes teaching and reinforcing positive behaviors rather than solely focusing on punishment for negative behaviors. It involves creating a supportive and structured environment, setting clear expectations, and providing rewards or incentives to encourage desired behaviors. The goal of PBIS is to improve overall behavior and create a more positive and productive atmosphere.
All of our students are learning "The Hannalei Way: We are Respectful, We are Kind and Caring, We are Responsible".
