Please review the following flyer regarding an upcoming opportunity for teachers in each region. Planning the next steps to re-open schools will involve many high impact, conflict-laden decisions in multiple areas.
• How do we make those decisions with confidence and clarity?
• How do we include stakeholders in a meaningful way?
• What decisions need to be made first?
• What are the risks with substantial change?
In this webinar, we will provide key elements of decision making for teachers, school and district leaders as you prepare for the next phase. These strategies will introduce a collaborative approach useful for decisions around budget, staffing, program models, mental health support, transportation, food service, IT, Special Education etc.
This is the second in a series of four webinars on strategic planning, decision making, special education adjustments and successful implementation of change to optimize continuity of learning and student and staff supports as you move into the next school year.

The overall goal of this study is to foster greater parental/family engagement within a school. As participants progress through this course they will consider outreach and communication strategies while they reflect on the reasons many families are disengaged from their child's school. This study will require the participant to read the book Engage Every Family: Five Simple Principles, discuss chapters online with other participants, work through several activities, and create an implementation plan for either their school or district. At the conclusion of each chapter/reading assignment there will be online discussion activities utilizing a learning management system, such as Google Classroom. Upon successful completion of this study, each participant will be awarded one (1) ACLD-PLU.

Applied Digital Skills is a free, flexible video-based curriculum that prepares students for the growing number of jobs that require basic digital skills, such as email and spreadsheets. Each of the more than 100 lessons offers educators an opportunity to leverage these resources directly into the classroom. These sessions will show you how you and your students can get the most from Applied Digital Skills.

The JSU Regional Inservice Center is proud to offer teachers our financial literacy series in conjunction with the JSU Center for Economic Education. Presenters from the Federal Reserve Bank, Alabama Insurance Commission, and the Retirement Systems of Alabama will be part of the lineup. This summer’s sessions are virtual using the Zoom platform. Registration in PowerSchool is required to receive the Zoom link and receive credit upon completion. These sessions are open to ALL teachers and administrators across Alabama. Join Dr. Andrew Maxey on June 29 from 9:00-10:30 am for this virtual session regarding the use of standards-based grading practices. Standards-based grading better informs instruction by identifying areas of strength and needed improvement while providing valuable feedback to students, parents, teachers, and administrators in creating meaningful interventions. Join us for this session to learn more about the process and impact for your students.

On June 30 from 9:00-10:00 am, join Dr. Sara McDaniel, associate professor and Director of the Alabama Positive Behavior Support Office for this presentation from the Center for Interconnected Behavioral and Mental Health Systems and the Alabama Positive Behavior Support Office. This session will overview the importance of addressing social, emotional, and behavioral needs during this time of school closure. Four practical strategies for supporting the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of all students will be explained. Specifically, we will discuss (a) maintaining relationships, (b) well-being check-ins, (c) classroom management for virtual instruction, and (d) virtual recognition and praise strategies.

Due to the fact that Dr. Parker's June session filled to capacity within a matter of days, she has graciously agreed to offer a repeat session on July 8, 2020 from 10:00-11:30 am.

In this session, participants will learn classroom management hacks to help them more effectively manage the classroom and help it run more smoothly. These techniques will also help teachers focus on small group instruction and the flow of learning rather than on disruptions.

During this training we will find and interpret key reports in Performance Series. We will use the information from those reports to target objectives for both groups and individuals. Join us for this incredible learning opportunity with Dr. LeeAnn Jung, CEO of Lead Inclusion and lead author of ASCD text, Your Students, My Students, Our Students: Rethinking Equitable and Inclusive Classrooms. Dr. Jung is also a clinical professor at San Diego State University with her co-authors, Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey. She provides support in the areas of inclusion, standards-based learning and grading, designing individualized and goals and interdisciplinary supports, and measuring progress. She has authored 6 books, more than 45 journal articles and book chapters, and has been awarded more than 4 million dollars in federal funding.

This opportunity will be offered in a two-part learning cohort. After the session on September 8, participants will leave with strategies for application within their school teams. Participants will return in December for a follow-up session with Dr. Jung. School teams (consisting of an administrator and multiple teachers) are encourage to attend! Session is limited to 75 participants. Books, training, and substitute reimbursement will be provided by the UA/UWA Regional In-Service Center.

Often times, when geography standards are talked about among teachers, it is immediately assumed that students hear about Alabama geography for the first time in 3rd grade; but, this is not the case! Important geographic skills and concepts are addressed in all grades, starting in kindergarten. The primary goal of this institute is to reestablish the importance of social studies standards as it pertains to geography in a fun, hands-on way. In this PD session you’ll learn about the Giant Traveling Map of Alabama. This resource is a large Alabama map from National Geographic that has recently been purchased by the UA/UWA Regional In-Service Center for your use. Attend this session with Sarah Stroud, Tuscaloosa County Schools, and you’ll learn how to check it out for your classroom. You have to see this to believe it—it’s incredible! ***Substitute reimbursement will be provided for each participant.

Calling all school counselors in the UA/UWA Region! Although we had to reschedule our date, we are thrilled that all of our speakers will be with us in February! Registration is open now! It will be a wonderful way to celebrate National School Counseling Week!

We are excited to announce that registration in PowerSchool is open for the 1st Annual West Alabama Regional School Counselors' Conference on Friday, February 5, 2021 at the UA/UWA Regional In-Service Center (260 Kilgore Lane, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401). Registration will be open at 8:00 am, and the first session will begin at 8:30 am.

This free opportunity is available to all K-12 school counselors in our region. (If space allows, we will open the event throughout the state.) A steering committee of counselors from both the north, central, and southern portions of our region have worked diligently to plan sessions based upon the needs reflected in our recent survey. These sessions include ethics updates for counselors, PowerSchool updates, data-driven programs, mental health, behavioral interventions, and social-emotional learning. We are also providing for one block of round-table sessions to which counselors can share ideas and network with colleagues throughout the region. Featured speakers are Dr. Amy Upton, Mr. Sean Stevens, and Dr. Greg Benner.

PLU OPPPORTUNITY:

The Alabama Technology in Motion program at the UA-UWA In-Service Center is partnering with ATiM at UAB to offer a new ACLD PLU this summer. The PLU is free and open to administrators and teachers with administrative certification. The focus of the PLU is how technology, pedagogy, and content knowledge (TPACK) work together to create effective teaching and learning environments. This course will meet online for Zoom sessions on June 8th, 9th and 10th from 9 AM to 10:30 AM each day. All other work will be completed online by participants after the virtual classes meet.
