Educating the Community about Hydroponics at OPRF (ECHOPRF) is a summer student work program whose mission is to promote hydroponics, a sustainable method of growing crops in a nutrient-rich solution without soil.
Students Quincy Chen-Marusich, Chloe Comm, Jaden Havener, Kieran Hogan, Isaac Hoyt, and Jaliyah Knighten explored the science of growing hyper-local, zero-emissions, nutritious produce in the Hydroponics Lab. They engaged with the community at Oak Park and Austin Town Hall Farmers Markets, inspired Oak Park Education Foundation BASE Camp youth with lab tours and activities, led a panel discussion with Estonian sustainability officials, and donated fresh produce to OPRF Food Service and Beyond Hunger, enriching school lunches and the community food bank.
This video is a culminating project created by the group, summarizing their work this summer.
