A Note From The Principal A Note From The Principal

Welcome to the 2024-25 School Year!

Although the end of summer, and the hustle and bustle of the school year looming, presents our students and families with a wide array of emotions, I'm hopeful that this note finds you all well-rested, in good health, and in high spirits for the upcoming year.

On behalf of the Edison staff, we're thrilled to extend a warm welcome to all of our Eagles and families, both new and returning! We're excited to begin this journey together and are honored to partner with you throughout the year to establish a learning community where our Eagles flourish. Our dedicated staff has worked diligently over the summer to plan lessons, prepare classrooms, and ensure we are ready for the start of the new school year. The building looks wonderful and we are eager for our Eagles to fill our hallways with anticipation, our classrooms with curiosity, and our hearts with love!

It's a privilege to serve as your principal and I am very much looking forward to continuing to work collaboratively to ensure your child's success!

See you soon!

Hugs,

Mrs. Wiegand

Does Your Child Have Medical Needs? Does Your Child Have Medical Needs?

zoom_out_map

If your child has specific medical needs, please reach out to the main office prior to the start of school. In order to administer medication, consent forms must be completed. Consent forms for prescription medications must include dosage and frequency information signed by a physician. Medication, including inhalers, must be stored in the main office and not in backpacks or pockets.

In addition, if your child has a food allergy or medical condition that could potentially require treatment at school, we will need an updated 2024-25 medical plan signed by a physician.

A Message From Transportation-

Bus routes for this year are posted on our website. Please make sure to check this as we have consolidated some routes for this year due to ongoing driver shortages and your stop may have changed from last year.

Also, with several construction projects in the area, our buses may be slightly off our scheduled times. Please continue to have your students at the bus stop 10 minutes before their scheduled time.

Thank You For Attending Our Meet The Teacher Night! Thank You For Attending Our Meet The Teacher Night!

zoom_out_map

Thank you to the many, many families that were able to attend our Meet The Teacher Night on Wednesday, August 21.

We appreciate the support, kind words, and extreme generosity in supply donations! We truly do have the best families at Edison!

Our staff joked that all of our returning Eagles grew a foot over the summer! Their sweet, timid smiles melted our hearts, as they noticed some of the changes that we made in the building over the summer and tried to get acquainted with their new classrooms!

And our new families! Thanks for bringing nothing but positive vibes on Wednesday! We were so excited to meet all of you! Edison is a special place and we can't wait to get to know all of you and watch our newest Eagles learn and grow!

Thank you all for sharing your children with us this year! We will love them like they're our own!

If you were unable to attend, or missed the Principal Presentation, I've included the slide deck below for you to review. Don't hesitate to reach out with any questions!

Your Child's Lifelong Attendance Habits Start Now

Chronic absenteeism is considered a hidden educational crisis in the U.S.

Throughout this first month of school, strive for your child to have perfect attendance (unless, of course, your child falls ill).

Although some children experience anxiety around coming to school, especially in the early weeks of the school year, it is important to keep bringing them, each and everyday- because it WILL become easier for them! Succumbing to that anxiety lays the groundwork for your child to become chronically absent. If your child is nervous about coming to school and is giving you a "run for your money" in the mornings this month, don't hesitate to give us a call and we can try to help.

Children with good attendance (9 or fewer days absent per year) typically:

*Maintain quality friendships

*Are less anxious about school

*Are more confident

*Are higher achieving

*GRADUATE!

*Experience success in the work force and in LIFE!

Remember, all absences count toward chronic absenteeism, even if you call the attendance line or provide documentation.

In Fraser, we continue to work hard to decrease chronic absenteeism- which in turn benefits ALL students!

THE SECOND STEP SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL LEARNING CURRICULUM K-8

Now more than ever, we need to address the whole child. Best practice shows that students who feel safe and secure are better prepared to engage in their learning. Therefore, we are excited to continue to use Second Step in our K-8 classes beginning in September to further strengthen our commitment to social and emotional learning. (For more information about the benefits of SEL, please check out the quick video below.)

Second Step offers weekly, age-appropriate virtual lessons for students to help them with various social and emotional skills. These weekly lessons will build on and support all of the great work we're doing at Twain to support our students. Combined with our schoolwide restorative practices and consistent PBIS expectations, we are creating a firm Tier 1 foundation for supporting all of our students' social, emotional, and behavioral development.

Please view the flyers below to learn more about the program topics, and look for additional updates from classroom teachers and ALL district newsletters.

A Few School Policies & Procedures To Make Note Of: A Few School Policies & Procedures To Make Note Of:

zoom_out_map

Attendance

Your child's lifelong school/work attendance habits are being deeply established right now. Parents should make every effort to get their child to school by 8:30AM each day and allow them to stay for the full duration of every day. Excessive absences, tardies, and early dismissals hugely impact a child's confidence, social interactions, and school performance.

zoom_out_map

Birthday Treats

Birthday students may bring store-bought, individually wrapped treats/snacks or trinkets to distribute to their classmates to be taken home. Please do not send in a tray of cupcakes, homemade baked goods, pizza, etc intending for them to be consumed at school- as many students have dietary restrictions that need to be closely monitored by their parents & school staff. All treats/trinkets will be sent home with students.

zoom_out_map

Cell Phones

Parents- We will definitely need your ongoing help and reinforcement with this one! Cell phones need to be silenced/powered down and secured in student backpacks from 8:30AM-3:30PM. Students may utilize cell phones before or after school hours. Students may not record or photograph others on school property or on school-provided transportation.
zoom_out_map

Hot Food Deliveries

Please do not plan to drop off "hot lunches" for your child at lunch time. This includes parents/family members dropping off fast food and/or Door Dashing food for their children. It is very logistically challenging to ensure that your child receives the food delivery on time and often results in students spending much of their lunch period awaiting a delivery.

Free and Reduced Meals Free and Reduced Meals

The State of Michigan will provide a free breakfast and lunch for all students who want them throughout the 2024-2025 school year. Although not required, we do ask that families complete the Education Benefit Form located HERE. By doing so you help ensure the school receives additional funding.
