Principal's Reflection - Mr. Altieri
They say time flies when you're having fun and I would have to agree! My first two years at Lansing Intermediate went by faster than I could have imagined. I always tell people I have the best job because every day is different and I get to help kids. I am grateful for our Lansing community being supportive and helping us make positive changes at LIS.
Thank you to parents and students who helped make our Glow Dance a huge success. We look forward to continuing the tradition of holding it in May. If you have any suggestions or feedback from it, please email me at martin.altieri@usd469.net.
We are busy this summer getting ready for students to return next month. Our custodial and maintenance crews are cleaning rooms, waxing floors, and fixing things up around the building. We were awarded a grant by BCBSKC last year and will be installing a Gaga Ball pit on the north playground later this month.
New staff members are receiving training and you will see their intros posted on our website/social media starting next week. I am excited about how strong our staff will be next year and how our new staff members mesh with our existing ones and bring exciting ideas with them.
On a personal note, my family has been busy this summer moving into a new house. Between assembling furniture, putting in new light fixtures/ceiling fans, and building a gazebo and raised garden in the backyard, I feel a little like Bob Vila. Thankfully, most of that is done now!
I look forward to seeing all of you on our Meet the Teacher night on August 13th and welcoming everyone back to Lansing Intermediate. Enjoy the rest of your summer and go Royals (and Chiefs this fall)!
Assistant Principal's Reflection - Mrs. Settles
It is hard to believe that another school year has come to an end. I have thoroughly enjoyed my fourth year as elementary assistant principal at Lansing Intermediate School. I am always amazed when I reflect over the past school year; regardless of the demands that come with being an educator and supporting and teaching students, our staff truly stepped up to the plate to do an amazing job of teaching and guiding all students this year, and the immeasurable impact they had on students’ learning is something I am very proud of.
One of my goals as an administrator this year was to assist in growing our building in the collective use of a set of building-wide instructional, learning, and behavioral practices to support teachers, help them learn from each other and improve their own practice while improving student outcomes. This year’s focused professional development that included training on Kagan teaching strategies, continued dedication towards training and implementation of BIST, and collaborative efforts put forth in weekly PLC meetings resulted in teams that were more creative, more productive, and better problem-solvers. Most noteworthy are the positive results we saw beyond academic outcomes; students who are excited about learning, teachers who make learning engaging and fun each day, students participating in challenging lessons where they persevere while solving difficult real-world problems, and students conducting investigations where they ask questions, make observations, and collect data.
I am very proud of our students and the gains they showcased socially, emotionally and academically, and of our parents who support their children the best ways they know how and worked in tandem with our teachers to model the importance of teamwork and education. I am incredibly appreciative to work alongside our school Principal, Mr. Altieri, and our teachers who face challenges head on to do what is in the best interest of all our students, and I am very excited and looking forward to a brand-new year of learning and growing this Fall.

Hello Sweet Summertime!
Children love the summer months. It's the perfect opportunity to spend time outside in the sun and water. However, it's important to keep children safe while they're having fun.
Water Safety
Adult supervision is the best protection around water. Parents need to focus on their children 100% of the time. No distractions.
Designate a water- watcher.
Remember, no body of water, no matter how small is "drown proof."
Use life jackets on boats, around open bodies of water and when participating in water sports.
Secure pool gates and any entries to water sources.
Take swim lessons.
Sun Protection
Avoid sun exposure during peak hours.
Wear protective clothing (UPF of 50), hats and sunglasses.
Apply water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before going out in the sun and reapplied every 2 hours and after swimming or sweating.
Drink lots of water. Hydration is so important when spending time in the hot outdoors.
Wishing everyone a Happy and Safe Summer Break!

Hello from Mrs. Farrar!
Our district has adopted a new tool to help keep our district safe. It is the Stop it App, which can be installed on your phone and allows anyone to report any threats or concerns within minutes. It also lets you upload images and screenshots, and pick which school this affects. More information can be found at https://www.stopitsolutions.com/ and soon on our website. Download the app and select the school(s) that your child/children attend. This app is available on all student iPads and students have been taught how to use this important safety tool. Please reach out if you have any questions.
Have a wonderful day!

Morning Student Drop-off Procedures
LIS Parents,
We want to ensure our students arrive at school safely. Please help us by reviewing our car drop off procedures.
Do not back up traffic by turning left from Ida. Cars have been swerving around backed up traffic and it is dangerous for everyone involved.
If you plan to sit in the car with your child, and not immediately drop off, pull forward to the end of the cones to prevent traffic backing up to Ida.
Circle around the parking lot back to Ida after dropping off.
Be patient. Saving thirty seconds of time is not worth endangering our students.
Reach out to school staff if there are issues you see that need to be addressed. We are always looking to make drop off more efficient and streamlined.
Cell Phone Policy
If you need to get a message to your child, please contact the office and we can make sure your message is passed along to them. Students caught using their phone will receive a warning the first time. Future violations may result in a discipline referral for inappropriate use of technology.
Thank you for doing your part to help foster a strong learning environment at LIS!
