A Message from the Captain
Dear Parents,
This upcoming week is going to be filled with fun! We are starting the week by holding a “Half Way” assembly filled with teacher relay races, trivia, and games. Each grade level will cheer their grade level teachers on to take home the “prize!” Then, we are inviting visiting scientists into the building to share hands-on activities with the students on Wednesday. Thank you to the APT and Spirit for their support organizing and funding this opportunity. We’ll conclude the week with our January birthday lunches. So fun!!!
The learning highlight this week is from third grade! In Mrs. VanDerveer’s class students engaged in a “Book Cafe” where she “served up” good books from the classroom library! To tie into the unit on light and sound, Mrs. V used ROY G BIV to describe reading.
Reading is:
Remarkable
Outrageous
Your own adventures
Gifts
Brilliant and beloved authors like Beverly Cleary and Jake Maddox
Incredible
Valuable
The kids loved hearing highlights about some books they have never read. Mrs. VanDerveer shared that Choice Read time has been fabulous the last couple of days as kids are excited about what they are reading!
Sincerely,
Megan

SLT news: Cereal Drive Coming Soon!
Coming soon! During the week of 2/11, SLT and Everett will be partnering with Fill-A-Heart to do a cereal drive, with the goal of setting up a school-wide domino chain around the entire school. We are excited to encourage lots of donations so that we can do this! Cereal boxes won't be brought in until 2/11, but we wanted to let everyone know that one of our teachers noticed a great sale on cereal going on at Jewel right now through Tuesday- so, with the long weekend, if you wanted to get a jump start and save some money this is a great deal!
(Rerun) Carline Refreshers
Here are a few quick procedural reminders:
Pull all the way forward at morning drop off and afternoon pick up. This allows for us to fit more cars into the parking lot and get students in and out of school quickly and safely. The parents behind you are thankful for helping make sure their child
Use the sidewalks when walking your child to the playground. Do not drop your children off in the middle parking area and let them walk across the drop off lane by themselves.
If you need to park, pull all the way forward past the east lamp.
Stay in your car while your children exit. We have staff available to help them.
(Rerun) Cold Weather Clothing/Recess
As winter draws near, we want to remind families that we go outside for recess according to the weather watch guidelines from Illinois State Board of Education. Please ensure your child is dressed for the cold, with a warm coat, hat, gloves, and anything else needed to stay comfortable while playing outdoors. For snow, students need boots and snow pants to play in the field and playground. We ask parents to take a moment to label all winter clothing, especially snow pants, with your child's name.
