Cornwall News
April 19, 2024
Hello Cornwall School families,
I apologize that this newsletter wasn't sent out on the Friday before break. I won't go into all the details, but I found out on Thursday afternoon that a funeral was scheduled Saturday for a very close friend's daughter. I left Friday morning to be able to get to the funeral.
That means I missed the culmination of the week with Circus Smirkus, which is a bummer! Please see Cornwall School's instagram for some great photos and videos posted by Val Calzini.
I hope you've all been having a wonderful break and enjoying this spring weather. See you on Monday.
Warmly,
Heather
Class Highlight, Music
Students at Cornwall school have been working on keeping a steady beat by
playing the game Pass It. We listen to the song Sir Duke or songs we have
learned to sing and pass different objects around the circle with a steady
beat. We have also just finished an IB unit that focused on "Humans use
symbols and gestures to communicate". We explored how a musical conductor
uses gestures to communicate to the orchestra, learned how to read music
and play recorders, and used musical notation to write boomwhacker
compositions. The 4th and 5th grade classes just began a ukulele unit. In
this unit they will learn 4 chords, how to read and write chord charts, and
will choose a favorite song to learn on the ukulele.
Our combined band (and Ripton/Weybridge chorus) rehearsals and evening concert will be coming up soon after break! Here are the times and places:
* Salisbury Friday 5/10 12:30-1:45 combined band rehearsal, 1:45-2:30 combined chorus rehearsal
* MUHS Monday 5/20 12:30-1:45 combined band rehearsal, 1:45-2:30 combined chorus rehearsal, 6:30 concert (6:00 call)
* Daytime concerts at each school (by just students from that school) TBD.
Book GIveaway
On Tuesday, Ms. Abby helped Cornwall students to select 3 new books to keep. These books were donated by Reading is Fundamental and Sylvamo Corporation. We hope these books helped keep your student reading over break!
4/5 Students and Their PYP Exhibitions
PYP Exhibition - Climate Change, Animal Rights , etc.
If you have been to the front door or in the building recently, you may have noticed signs and posters explaining some action projects that 4th and 5th graders are working on as part of their Exhibition project. Please ask students what they are researching and what they are planning for their action projects!
Please also see some of the requests below -

Climate Change
There is a new afterschool program, volleyball club, which will be raising money to donate to a company that is trying to stop climate change, Giving Green, (Givinggreen.earth). It will be from 3:00 - 4:00 PM on Tuesdays starting May 7, ending May 28." The problem is that Myles and I have Keewaydin on the week of may 13, and we won't be there to run the volleyball club, so can you instead write: There is a new afterschool program, volleyball club, which will be raising money to donate to a company that is trying to stop climate change, Giving Green, (Givinggreen.earth). It will be from 3:00 - 4:00 PM on Tuesdays starting May 7, Ending June 4. (There is no volleyball on Tuesday, May 14, because 5th Grade will be at Keewaydin).
