We Celebrate Juneteenth On June 19th
For more than one-and-a half centuries, Juneteenth has been sacred to many Black communities. In 1863, during the American Civil War President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared more than three million enslaved people living in the Confederate states to be free. However, more than two years would pass, before the news reached enslaved African Americans living in Texas. It was not until Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, that the state’s residents finally learned that slavery had been abolished. The formerly enslaved immediately began to celebrate with prayer, feasting, song, and dance.
June is National Caribbean Heritage Month
We recognize the achievements, influence, and contributions of Caribbean Americans during National Caribbean American Month (NCAM) during the month of June. National Caribbean American Heritage Month began in 2005 after the U.S House of Representatives passed a resolution acknowledging the impact of Caribbean people and their descendants in U.S. history and culture. The campaign to create the event was driven by Claire Nelson, founder and president of the Institute of Caribbean Studies. The Caribbean region is home to over a dozen island nations, including Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad.

Summer is a wonderful time for students to engage in SSL opportunities and earn SSL hours towards meeting the 75-hour state graduation requirement!
High school students should continue earning SSL hours towards their SSL graduation requirement by engaging in SSL opportunities during the summer, including traditional in-person opportunities and select virtual/remote opportunities that follow the guidelines posted on the MCPS SSL webpage (www.mcps-ssl.org).
Students should hold onto any SSL Activity Verification forms (560-51) for service completed during this summer and turn them into their school’s SSL coordinator, Mrs. Curtis, in the fall.
