Principal's Message
Happy Groundhog Day!
It depends on which groundhog you "follow" - Punxatwany Phil says 6 more weeks of winter, while Buckeye Chuck says early spring! This week is certainly going to feel like an early spring with 50* temps!
I spent today in Canton officiating a swim meet for the Special Olympics of Ohio. This is a great event for differently able people from all ages! I prefer being there for their celebrations when they win - it's like they won the Super Bowl! (And winning meant different things, for some, it was just being able to swim across the pool.)
We have many things going on this week! Two assemblies - one for our fundraiser and one for our Kids Heart Challenge (it got postponed from last week). We are also celebrating 100 school days by wearing NEON!
Sincerely,
Cara Will, principal
Kids Heart Challenge
What is Wellness Week?
In my day, it was known as "Jump Rope for your Heart", but that was a long time ago. Now, the American Heart Association uses the event to teach students about how to keep their heart - and the rest of their bodies - healthy through activity.
Your child will come home with a packet on Tuesday after our kick-off assembly. There will be directions for how to sign your student(s) up. The good news is they don't have to raise any money to participate! They just need to complete Finn's Mission to earn prizes. It is all online. You can click the link below to learn more and get started!

What's happening at STEM?
2nd Grade Communicating their Learning
Our 2nd graders worked hard to create an artifact to put in a box for next year's 2nd graders! At Springmill STEM, we seek opportunities for students to learn 21st Century skills that employers look for more than college degrees: how to be curious, creative, flexible. Also, we expose them to opportunities to fail on purpose! So they can learn how to try again! Communication is a huge characteristic - in all forms. In these pictures, you can see 2nd graders standing by projects while classes from all grade levels walk through to talk to them about their work.
January Students of the Month
We are proud to present our January students of the month! Teachers chose these students based on their commitment to and/or improvement on our schoolwide behavior expectations: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Ready, Be Safe and Be Proud!
Take the Show on the Road!
Last week, two of our outstanding STEM teachers presented at the Science Education Council of Ohio Conference. Most science conferences are geared more for middle and high school students, but we want to share the great things happening in elementary school! The audience wanted to learn more about how we teach our little ones the same science principles as they do with their older students.
