On behalf of the School Board and Charlottesville City Schools' staff, let me officially welcome you to the 2023 summer of learning, exploration, and excitement! We recognize that families need assistance making plans and preparations for their children during the summer. This site is a hub for summer opportunities that are run by our division, the City of Charlottesville, or program partners in our schools. These offerings are either free, financially accessible, or offer scholarships. While it is not meant to be a full list of everything happening in Charlottesville this summer, we hope that this site provides you with an array of options that suit your children and the needs of your family.

Teen LIT (Leaders-in-Training) Camp is designed to teach and inspire students from rising 6th grade through rising 10th grade.

Teens learn leadership and job preparation skills, gain valuable camp counseling experience, and spend time with mentors who share the Y values of honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

Hands-on training experiences and professional development workshops provide the foundation of the program. The students spend their time learning about leadership in the morning, including practice in resume writing and interview skills. UVA professionals visit the program to share information about different career paths. Students practice their skills mentoring the campers in the afternoon. Students learn basic safety, group control, games, camp best practices and valuable employment skills.

Students will also enjoy swimming, weekly field trips, campfire s'mores, a counselor-vs.-camper sports tournament, and much more.

Space is limited. The student must attend every day, and can attend anywhere from 1 week to all 10 weeks of the summer.

YMCA is excited to offer a FREE YMCA Membership to teens (ages 13-18) in the Charlottesville area this summer!

• YMCA members age 13+ can have full facility access without a parent present

The YMCA Teen Leaders Club is a free program giving middle- and high-school-age teens opportunities to develop leadership skills, give back to their community through volunteer work, and have fun. Teens will strengthen skills centering on body, mind, and spirit. The year-long program includes volunteering, team-building, fitness, devotions, academic enrichment, and social events.

Once they have earned enough volunteer hours to qualify, participants also get to attend the Blue Ridge Leaders' School experience at the end of the year! Teens can be in Leader's Club as many years as they'd like.

In collaboration with Charlottesville City, Albemarle County, and local schools, the UVA Center for Race and Public Education (CRPES) is excited to be hosting its fourth operational year of the Charlottesville Freedom School for 3rd-8th grade students! This FREE summer program will take place June 20 - July 21. In order to enroll, your child must be a student of Charlottesville City Schools, Albemarle County Schools, or another local school.

Freedom Schools are high-quality summer literacy and cultural enrichment programs that "empower youth to excel and believe in their ability to make a difference in themselves, their families, communities, country, and world with hope, education, and action. "if you child participates, you can expect:

• 10 to 1 class ratios
• Books to help you child build their home library
• One-on-one tutoring & mentoring
• Free breakfast & lunch
• Free school supplies
• High-quality social studies instruction
• Field trips

Fees

Weekly fee of $75.00 for residents and $95.00 for non-residents. Financial assistance is available through our Scholarship Program.

Transportation

As of now transportation to and from camp is not available. If transportation becomes available participants will be notified.

Scholarships

City residents in need of financial assistance may apply for our scholarship program by drop-off to the Parks & Recreation Administrative Office at 501 East Main Street, by mail (P.O. Box 911, Charlottesville, VA 22902) or online. Scholarship applications must be submitted and approved prior to registration. Scholarship processing takes 7-10 business days.

Inclusion Program

Our inclusion program provides extra support to campers with disabilities. Campers should have the ability to function with occasional assistance as a member of a group of 10 or more campers. We are not able to provide one-to-one assistance. With your registration, please indicate if you will need accommodations when prompted. A three-week notice is requested in order for the Department to make reasonable accommodations based on individuals needs for successful inclusion.

Camp Shenandoah - Burnley-Moran Elementary School

Ages 5-9 (Rising 1st through 4th Graders)

KidsCollege scholarships are available based on financial need and are granted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Wildrock is also offering an internship program for teens interested in developing leadership skills as camp assistants.

The Teen internship program gives young leaders a chance to develop skills related to child development, outdoor education, and stewardship practices.

Participants may apply online. A training will be held in early June.

Summer 2023 (Weeks of June 12–16, June 26–30, and July 10–14)

The Apex Clean Energy Academy is an experiential one-week course that will introduce high school students to renewable energy! Each session will run from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and lunch and snacks will be provided. You will work with GIS systems, learn how to plan a renewable energy project, and make connections with Apex department leads and industry experts. If you are interested in gaining valuable skills in one of the most exciting and new industries today, fill out our interest form by April 14, 2023.

What is the Apex Clean Energy Academy?

The Apex Clean Energy Academy is designed to provide hands-on experience in renewable energy and is taught by a team of Apex renewable energy subject matter experts. This program is for tenth and eleventh graders looking to explore renewable energy.

What would I do as a participant?

Participants will join us for a one-week, half-day program at Apex Plaza near downtown Charlottesville. The program will be offered three times between June 12 and July 10, 2023. Participants will receive training with GIS systems, engage in site planning for a renewable energy project, and have small group discussions with Apex subject matter experts and department leads. Apex will provide lunch each day.

To be eligible for the Apex Clean Energy Academy, you must:

1. Attend Charlottesville High School as a tenth or eleventh grader.
2. Complete the interest form (scan the QR code below access the form). The full application form will be sent in the following weeks.
3. Express interest in renewable energy.
4. Identify as minority or low-income.
5. Commit to the entire week of the Academy.

When is the Apex Clean Energy Academy?

There are three sessions of the Academy: June 12–16, June 26–30, and July 10–14.

Each session offers the same material (students attend for one week only).

Each week runs from Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Lunch and snacks will be

provided. Transportation considerations will be addressed on an individual basis.

How much does the Apex Clean Energy Academy cost?

The program is free. Upon completion, each participant will receive an Apex Clean Energy Academy Accelerator certificate, a $50 Visa gift card, and substantive experience for resumes or college applications.

UVA Women's Basketball is excited to host the first Coach Mox Basketball Day Camp in June 2023 and cannot wait for you to join them. Camps are designed to provide campers with an opportunity to learn skills and techniques that assist them in excelling on the court and beyond. Under the instruction of the Virginia Women’s basketball coaches, staff, and players, each of their camps will focus on providing the highest level of instruction and drills to bring out the best in each camper. They are excited to share these fun and exciting experiences with you!

Check-in:
On the first day of Day Camp, (June 26th), check-in will begin at 8:00 a.m. just inside the main entrance to John Paul Jones Arena.
On the days following (June 27th & 28th), campers may begin to arrive at 8:30 a.m. Camp will begin each day promptly at 9:00 a.m. on the main floor and end there at 4:00 p.m.

Meals:
Lunch will be provided each day. Concessions will be available for purchase as well.

The City of Charlottesville is pleased to announce the next session of CAYIP! The deadline to apply is Monday, May 1, 2023 at 5 pm. Youth can complete the CAYIP Application online.

In an effort to keep participants, staff, and community members safe all program participants and staff are expected to follow the City of Charlottesville policies regarding COVID mitigation. If a youth refuses to comply with these expectations, they may be excused from the program. Please be advised that these mitigation strategies may include but are not limited to masking, proof of vaccination and/or COVID testing.

Some CAYIP partners may have additional mitigation practices and policies. If your child is matched and accepts placement at a site, the expectation is that your child would follow the mitigation practices and policies outlined by that site.

Program Goals:

• To teach workplace readiness skills.
• To assist youth in career exploration.
• To help youth identify their strengths and build resiliency.
• To connect youth to positive adults and to resources in the community.

Program Highlights:

• All interns will participate in CAYIP Orientation and Academy the week of June 26, 2023. Interns will learn workplace readiness skills, communication and conflict management skills, banking and budgeting skills and much more!
• All participants will be assigned a CAYIP counselor who meets with the youth a minimum of once a week.
• Youth are expected to work up to twenty hours a week for the six week session.
• This session, youth will have the opportunity to earn a performance-based stipend up to $12 per hour (not to exceed $1,200 for the summer session).
• Youth will work with staff to complete a resume at the end of the session.

Application and Acceptance Process:

• The program is open to City of Charlottesville youth between the ages of 14-21.
• Youth will be able to apply now until Monday, May 1, 2023 at 5pm.
• Youth will need to complete a CAYIP Application which includes the Application Questionnaire, Agreement to Participate form, and the Parent/Guardian and Youth Expectation form. The link will automatically send you to the next form once you hit submit.
• If youth and families have any questions, they can reach out to staff at CAYIP Inquiries.
• We will continue to monitor the situation for health and safety and respond as necessary.

CAYIP Timeline: Spring 2023

• April 3, 2023 - May 1, 2023 5pm: Application submission window.
• April 17, 2023 - May 19, 2023: Applicant interviews (these will take place through via Zoom.).
• May 29 to June 2, 2023: Youth notified of acceptance
• June 26 - June 30, 2023 : CAYIP Orientation and Academy (all participants).
• The session will run from June 26, 2023- August 6, 2023.
• There is no programming Tuesday, July 4, 2023 as City offices are closed.

Explore Engineering is a five-day summer enrichment program for middle school students from Charlottesville and Albemarle County; it is focused on STEAM: science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.

This program is sponsored by the Public Education Foundation of Charlottesville/Albemarle, the Center for Diversity and Inclusion at UVA's School of Engineering and Applied Science, and local industries.

The camp will be held in Rice Hall at the University of Virginia from July 17 - 21, 2023. We meet each day from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with a break for lunch at UVA’s O-Hill dining facility.

Each morning, student teams will work on hands-on engineering activities. Last year, they were Special Delivery (transporting a ping pong ball to a remote location using a limited set of materials), Harness the Wind (generating electricity with wind power), Trash Sliders (building a vehicle from trash that could transverse an obstacle course without spilling its load), and Ra Power (designing and building a solar car to pull weighed cart).

Afternoons are devoted to individual art activities conceived and directed by a local artist. Last year, these included building UFO's, making plaster fossils using sand casting, constructing and painting paper kites, and making masks using vacuform technology.

Each year the activities may be different, but will engage and excite the students.

The Buford Theatre summer program is designed for students finishing grades 5th through 8th school year 2022-23. The theme this summer is - “Telling Our Own Stories- Our Heritage & Culture.” Campers will explore their own and others' cultural journeys through research and communication with each other. Campers will be able to select three tracks to focus on during camp from: acting, playwriting, film, visual art, theatrical arts, music, and dance. Campers will take two classes a day in each of their focus areas. They will follow these tracks throughout camp and all campers will work together to create a final showcase. Students will work with Guest Artists from Chicago as well as Broadway Guest Artist- Dr. Keith Byron Kirk. Camp is free and bus transportation is provided to students within the CCS bus routes. There is no cost to students.

The Jefferson School African American Heritage Center's Trailblazers Program is a dynamic program that prepares young African Americans to give tours of our permanent and temporary exhibitions. As a Trailblazer, students learn the history of Charlottesville’s African American community; become well versed in national African American history, Emancipation through the present; and have a working knowledge of 20th-21st century African American art history. Through discussion, project based research, and field trips, they acquire the skills to become community educators.

Students involved in the program are paid hourly during training. Upon completion they will also be paid hourly for guide services.

New program begins July 5 and ends August 11, 9-1 pm. Fill out our application to apply.

The CCS Summer band program is designed for any rising 5th, 6th, 7th and or 8th grade student who would like to learn a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument. All abilities and levels will be accepted and accommodated. The program will focus on beginning instruction for new band students and continued practice of skills for all other musicians. Students may rent an instrument for a $25 summer rental fee. A Waiver is available for families who qualify for the school’s free or reduced lunch program. This program will take place at Walker Upper Elementary School.

Summer Band sessions will be scheduled Monday-Thursday during the hours of 9:00-2:00 on the following dates:

The CCS Summer orchestra program will be offered in two sessions providing students with structured playing experiences that focus on skills such as major scales, sight reading, fingerings, extended range, new repertoire. The program is designed to serve rising 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade orchestra students. The two sessions are different, but not sequential. Students may participate in just session I, just session II, or both allowing families more opportunities to work around vacation and summer schedules.

Session #1 - Tues-Thur, July 24-27

9:00 - 10:30 a.m.: Rising 6th Grade at Walker Upper Elementary School

11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.: Rising 7th-8th Grade at Walker Upper Elementary School

1:30 - 4:00 p.m. - Rising 9th-12th Grade at Charlottesville High School

Session #2 – Mon-Thur, July 30-August 3

9:00 - 10:30 a.m.: Rising 6th Grade at Walker Upper Elementary School

11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.: Rising 7th-8th Grade at Walker Upper Elementary School

1:30 - 4:00 p.m. - Rising 9th-12th Grade at Charlottesville High School

The 7-8th groups will be some part large ensemble, some part chamber ensemble. All Students will present an end-of-camp performance. This program will be taking place at Walker Upper Elementary. Students may rent an orchestra instrument for a $25 summer rental fee. A Waiver is available for families who qualify for the school’s free or reduced lunch program.

The UVA Summer Opportunities in Academic Research (SOAR) Program provides a high-quality research experience for high school and early undergraduate students. This 8-week summer program will give participants career mentorship and an exciting hands-on research experience to support and grow their interest in science careers. Participants will receive a $2500 stipend, free lunches, and access to a laptop for the duration of the program, which makes the program an option for students who planned to work over the summer break!

PROGRAM DATES:

• June 12 – August 4, 2023
• Daily 9:30 am - 5:00 pm
• Holidays: Monday June 19th (for Juneteenth) and Monday July 3rd – Friday July 7th (for Fourth of July)

WHO:

• Motivated students who are under-represented in STEM, as defined by NIH guidelines
• High School: rising 11th and 12th grade students
• College: rising freshman (1st year) and sophomore (2nd year) students
• No prior experience in research is necessary!

Get paid to shade the city!

ReLeaf Cville will begin its 2nd year of the Green Team Ambassador Program that will combat the impact of climate change in Charlottesville by using the greatest defense we have - trees.

Teens between the ages of 13 - 18, who are accepted into the program, will be paid a stipend of $300 and other gift certificates for:

• Attending four 2-3 hour, fun sessions with recreational activities to be completed over a 2-week period from July 10 - 21, 2023.
• Distributing literature about planting trees and saving energy in a City neighborhood.
• Planting trees in a City neighborhood.

On-line applications must be submitted by June 2, 2023. All applicants will get notified if they have received a place on the Green Team Program by June 7, 2023.
