Flu Season Is Here
Hello Families,
Flu season is here. You may have heard from district office communications or from local news that several San Diego County high school schools are experiencing high illness rates due to probable influenza. The district office has sent out information to families to not only raise awareness but share some tips on what each of us can do to help slow the spread of the flu:
- Get the flu shot
- Stay home if you are sick
- Wash hands frequently
- Cover cough and sneeze
- Rule out COVID - Take a COVID test! We have test kits available for families. Just come in and ask the front office/
- Avoid close contact with ill persons
- Masks can prevent many respiratory infections aside from COVID, like flu.
Stay safe Mustangs!

We need your help! Please fill out LCFF Survey
Each year the district is responsible for collecting information from our students’ families to
support the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) process. The LCFF is hallmark legislation that fundamentally changed how all local educational agencies (LEAs) in the state are funded, how they are measured for results, and the services and supports they receive to allow all students to succeed to their greatest potential. This year, the California Department of Education is allowing districts to collect information in May 2022 and it will be applied to the 2022 – 23 school year. We believe that starting now will reduce the burden of collecting information during the busy time of opening school in the fall and will potentially yield more complete information that will increase the amount of funding that schools and the district receive from the state. To support the state’s process, San Diego Unified utilizes an online system accessed through the Parent Portal in Power School. In the portal, we ask parents and families to complete a very short questionnaire that increases the district’s opportunity to receive funds from the state. The information is only collected for this process and will not be used for any other purpose. We ask that you sign-up for Parent Portal as soon as possible, if your school offers this option and you’ve not already done so and complete the short survey before the end of this school year. Paper survey forms will be available in October. By completing the survey, you will not only be supporting the district’s efforts, but increasing the chances of your child’s school receiving more of this valuable funding.
We have over 70% of LCFF submissions, thank you for your prompt action!
But we still need the other 30%!! Deadline is October, we can do better: 100% is the goal

MMO Pledge Drive
Our annual pledge drive is in full swing and is the single largest fundraising event for our school. The MMO works closely with the school administration to provide vital funding. Your financial contribution supports the academic programs within each department, as well as programs to support citizenship, safety and wellness in our students. Donations can be made online at www.mmofoundation.com/donate. All levels of support are welcome and much appreciated!
Who's Who at Marshall...
MMS is excited to introduce you to History teacher and Yearbook Advisor, Mr. Peter Lawrence. Mr. Lawrence has been teaching History at Marshall for two years and has just started teaching Yearbook this year:
How many years in education?I have been teaching for 28 years after spending a total of nine years in the United States Army in the combat arms. I taught English for 20 years and the last 8, history.
What is your favorite thing to do on the weekend? I lift weights, work on my yard and house. I am a "do it yourselfer" and I built my 2nd story deck, painted everything in the house, Installed a paver patio in my backyard and rebuilt the fencing. I also redid a bedroom into an upstairs den/work area. It is NOT a man cave, but a study or library.
What impact do you hope to make at Marshall? I hope to be a positive influence and teach the students just not about history, but about life.

Unity Day
Unity Day is right around the corner...October 19th. Time to dig through your drawer to find that bright orange Unity Day shirt! If you are new to MMS, we still have a few of the Unity Day shirts on hand, so come by the counseling office or find anything orange to wear next WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 19th. (Absolutely no orange in your closet? No problem! We will have orange ribbons in the staff workroom for you to pin on your shirt). Each year, we celebrate National Unity Day as part of October’s Bullying Prevention month, by wearing orange to show solidarity against bullying and in support of kindness, acceptance and inclusion. To honor this day, classrooms will be engaging in short lessons on cyberbullying and showing their support by wearing orange on Wednesday.
Some Things to Consider...
In education, we spend the bulk of our work on fundamental learning skills like reading, writing, and problem solving. Some would argue, that we don't spend enough time on the climate and culture of the classroom. Even as adults, we see culture and climate as secondary conditions that can enhance the work place environment, but often don't see them as foundational. However, much more information is emerging that factors, like psychological safety, are essential to any environment, work or school. This article shares some insight into psychological safety, what it is, and how can we cultivate it.
