On most Fridays during the school year, the Office of the Superintendent will send an update to the community highlighting some of the excellent work being done by our students, educators and school leaders. The update will also include important announcements from the district’s central office.
These newsletters will also be posted on the PSB website.
BHS Students Shine at MMEA Auditions
On November 2, 40 Brookline High School students auditioned for the prestigious and highly competitive Massachusetts Music Educators Association (MMEA) Eastern District Senior Music Festival, which is scheduled to take place in January 2025.
Simply going through the rigorous audition process would be considered an achievement, but our students bagged top honors. 17 students were accepted into at least one of the four groups offered at the festival – chorus, orchestra, band and jazz band. This included 6 first chairs, the Orchestra Concertmaster position (which goes to the highest ranking lead violinist), and 7 second chairs. Additionally, 11 students received MMEA All State Festival Audition recommendations, which are given to the top 50% of students accepted to the Senior District Festival.
Join us in congratulating the following students:

Día de Muertos Celebration at Runkle
The Spanish Enrichment After School Program (SEASP) at the Runkle School commemorated Día de Muertos or Day of the Dead, by setting up an altar in the main lobby.
Last week, around 25 students learned about the tradition of the altar and using their imagination, they created their own mini-altar honoring a beloved relative, pet or notable person that passed away. After the activity, they enjoyed traditional Mexican bread and hot chocolate with family and friends.
Many thanks to all the parents, teachers and students who helped organize this beautiful activity, and a special thanks to art teacher Alaina Ortiz, who has been very supportive of the program through the years.
BHS' Town Gown Project
Hundreds of BHS seniors buy graduation gowns every year, but most never use them again. These gowns are often not recycled and don’t biodegrade.
BHS alumni have a unique opportunity to give back while promoting sustainability. The Town Gown Project is collecting gently-used graduation gowns, which will be washed and redistributed to BHS seniors who might otherwise need to purchase new, unrecycled, and non-biodegradable gowns.
Gowns will be collected until Friday, November 15. Collection bins have been placed in the atrium and at the STEM wing entrance.
Preschool Screening
The Brookline Early Education Program (BEEP) will conduct preschool screenings on Tuesday, November 19, 2024. This is a free and optional service for preschool-aged Brookline residents (aged 2.6 to 5 years), who are not currently attending BEEP.
Screenings will take place by appointment only at 194 Grove Street, Chestnut Hill.
To schedule a screening appointment time, please fill out the survey below no later than November 12, 2024. If you have any questions or need more information, please contact Sarah Moynihan at (617)-713-5473 or sarah_moynihan@psbma.org.
Inside the Art Room
This week's art comes to us from Olivia Reyelt's sixth-grade students at the Driscoll School
To quote an article from the World Economic Forum, "Albert Einstein attributed his brilliant mind to having a child-like sense of humor. Indeed, a number of studies have found an association between human and intelligence."
The students in Ms. Reyelt's sixth-grade classes exercised their funny bones to create some very silly illustrated puns. The project began with a peek into the work of illustrator Keren Rosen and her love for turning a play on words into a humorous image. Students then chose their own compound word or idiom, and were challenged to create a drawing that described the different components of that word in a humorous way. Can you guess what word or phrase each of these images illustrates?

Events
Needs 'Improv'ment/Theater for Social Change
Needs Improvment, an upper level drama class at BHS, will take you on a wild ride through short-form improv activities, as seen on tv shows like Whose Line Is It Anyway?. Be sure not to miss it, because the ideas for the stories come from you, the audience, and what gets performed on Friday will never be performed again!
Theater for Social Change, also an upper level drama class at BHS, creates scenes focusing on social, political, and academic issues relevant to our community. Every performance is followed by a post-show discussion with the audience. TfSC's first performance of the year, Where There’s a Will There’s a Play, tackles the topic of autonomy in an original collection of scenes that seek to shed light on the nuances and many avenues of self government, and how our individual freedoms impact our lives.
