Rainy Day Dismissal FAQs 2024-2025
Please Read All Information Below
If there is extreme weather (wind, hail, lightning, extreme rain) at 4:05 PM we will not utilize the walk - up process - parents will be required to only use the car line to maximize efficiency of safely exiting students from our building. If a rainy day dismissal is called but there is not extreme weather (wind, hail, lightning, extreme rain) at 4:05 PM, we will release students directly to a parent to assume responsibility for the safety of the child at the Orchestra door. This is the door nearest to the YMCA side bike rack. We will have a staff member collecting student names (car rider signs not required - but are helpful) and a system for students to report to the area where a parent is waiting.
Parents do not wait on the front porch.
What is rainy day dismissal?
Rainy day dismissal is called when we’ve determined the weather in the area is not safe to release bikers and walkers. This may include, but is not limited to, heavy rain, lightning, thunder, and/or heavy winds. A decision will be made by 3:50 pm and communicated to parents via text.
Why do we wait so long to call rainy day dismissal?
Unfortunately, severe weather in our area changes extremely quickly. When a rainy day dismissal is called too early, the bad weather frequently moves out of the area by dismissal time.
Should I call the school when there is a rainy day dismissal?
No. If you are unsure of your rainy day dismissal plan, please reach out to your teacher now to confirm. Your student’s transportation will automatically default to your prearranged “rainy day dismissal” choice. As long as your student and your student's teacher knows your student’s rainy day dismissal plan, there is no need to contact the front office.
Car Rider Line Reminders
Every parent should have a car rider sign, and it should be visible in the car rider line. It includes the student name and the student ID. The most important is the student ID - that is the number that someone is reading over the phone to someone in the building.
Families without the car rider signs and without the student ID slows the process down substantially.
Importance of the car line order
Cars should not cut the Collins PM Car Line. A Collins staff member scans cars in the order they are lined up. Students are called from inside the building to meet their car and in the order the car was scanned. Cars that cut the line won't be in the computer system and the student will not be called to meet the car. In addition, cars have all waited and followed the Collins PM Car line guidelines and to cut in line is disrespectful to others.
So please don't
- Perform a U-turn in the middle of the road when you see a small gap of cars as they are moving forward.
- Use a side neighborhood road to cut the line.
- Drive up along side of the car line and move into a gap or try to turn in the front drive ahead of waiting car line.
- Make a left hand turn and cut the waiting car line.
When someone in the car line witnesses someone cut the line - please notify any/all of the Collins staff members on duty so that we can help that individual exit the drive and proceed to the end of the car line.
Any car that has not had the the car rider sign scanned by Collins Staff Member will be required to exit the drive and make their way to the end of the car line.
Carpooling during a rainy day dismissal
If you are picking up additional students due to rainy day dismissal, please write each student’s ID number as large as possible on a piece of paper.
If I’m a biker/walker parent, can I walk up to the school?
Please utilize the carline if possible. We have had a natural occurrence of parents walking up to Collins to pick up their students. We will release students directly to a parent to assume responsibility for the safety of the child at the Orchestra door. This is the door nearest to the YMCA side bike rack. We will have a staff member collecting student names (car rider signs not required - but are helpful) and a system for students to report to the area where a parent is waiting.
Parents should not be on the front porch of Collins during a rainy day dismissal.
It is 4:25 PM and the severe weather has passed - can my student now bike or walk home?
We will not release students to walk or bike once a rainy day dismissal has been called. When a rainy day dismissal is called, the crossing guards will only be stay at their location for a few moments before they leave their location. If the weather subsides 15 to 20 minutes after 4:00 dismissal started, there is no one to assist students in safely crossing the street.
Should I go to the front office to get my child?
No. On rainy dismissal days, please only come to the front office in emergency situations.
Will rainy day dismissal take longer than normal?
Yes. We appreciate your patience as we safely dismiss all students.
