Weekly Coaching Communication
Make it a great day -- every day!
16 - 20 April 2018
Hats off to you!
Here's this past week's amazement:
- Apologies . . . somehow this was lost in a change somewhere else, and I didn't notice it until it was too late for me to bring it back.

Pope's Professional Learning -- Sharing to Build Capacity
I have had a few conversations with teachers who feel that the close reading protocol and collaborative strategies and structures are limiting and do not engage students the way they thought they would.
In Knight's chapter 12, "Freedom Within Form" addresses this feeling of limitation and lack of engagement by offering strategies and protocols that stimulate dialogue and learning.
- First, understand that too much control damages relationships, and too little control wastes time, frustrates students and inhibits learning.
- Second, know that the use of dialogue structures, such as brainstorming, affinity diagrams, graphic organizers and nominal grouping techniques, dialogue is much easier, making learning easier.
- Third, by implementing procedures and routines (some semblance of a formal protocol), such as a talking stick, or using timers, or teaching students how to respond to a set of attention signals or how to use beginnings and endings to their advantage, you increase relationships and learning.
- Fourth, provide choices to students to allow them to have a voice in what they read and do in class; however, those choices need to come with criteria and parameters.
- Fifth, and most importantly, you have to demonstrate that you care about the student's engagement and learning through the control and power of strategies . . . or at least "fake it 'till you make it" that way.
