Pride,
I hope each of you had a wonderful and restful weekend and that you're ready for another week. I want to start with a shout-out for our parents and students. Each month, we call for nominations for two staff members of the month and over this past month, we had 34 nominations. Of the nominations, 30% were from parents and another 35% were from students. To the 22 non-staff members who nominated a Riverwalk Academy staff member, thank you!
While we announced internally our two September staff members on Friday, we'll publically share the two staff members with you all on Tuesday. Just so you're aware, we anonymously share all nominations with the nominees. You all write such wonderful things about the staff members that I think it's important for them to see what others are saying about them.
Moving on, I do have a bit of a shocking story to share with you all. I was at the grocery store on Thursday night and I was standing in the checkout line. The person in front of me was having a cell phone conversation with someone. She was having the conversation on speakerphone, so I didn't have to wonder what the other person was saying. I tried not to listen, but since the conversation was on speakerphone, everyone in my lane, and the other surrounding lanes, couldn't but help to hear the conversation.
What I heard shocked me. I didn't catch the first part of what the person in front of me said, but the person on the other line said, "And that's why I'm not telling the school about Duane's COVID diagnosis." Clearly, they were talking about the quarantine period for a household contact because the person in front of me made a comment about how her son has 4 more days before he can return to school.
What happened next, brought a smile to my face, and gave me a little more faith in humanity. The person in front of me said, "Linda, put yourself in the other person's shoes. If Brent (the son) came home and passed COVID along to the rest of the family because his classmate's family didn't tell the school that a parent of a student had COVID., you'd be livid and wanting to rush up to school demanding to speak to the other child's parents."
Pride, I know this year hasn't started off like we all were hoping for (back in June), but with some faith, understanding, and trust (in each other), we'll do our absolute best to keep it from spreading. I know that means we'll have to make calls to "quarantine" some. These are not done intentionally and we hate making these calls. We really do. We know it's a hardship that we're putting on a family, but please understand that we don't make the rules about quarantine and we must follow them. We, too, (myself, Ms. McCray, and Nurse Donna) have had to temporarily rearrange our lives because, at some point, our kids have been identified as close contacts.
To the 12 families, we've had to call so far this year to ask them to quarantine, we thank you for your understanding and support and for the compassion you conveyed during our call. Together, we'll make the best of this somewhat unpredictable year.
In Strength and Blessings,
~Dr. Compton

Photo of the Week
Did you know that this past Wednesday was National Dog Day? Clearly, we have a lot of dog lovers who belong to our Pride because they plastered our Facebook page with pictures of their dogs. Here are the pictures that were shared with us on Wednedsay.
COVID-Related
We're asking that our families assist us in managing everyone's status by using this form when your child shows symptoms, tests positive, is a close contact, or is a household close contact. The data shared with us is kept confidential. After completing this form, you'll receive an email or phone call from Nurse Donna to discuss your child's specific isolation/quarantining plan.
Linked here is Riverwalk Academy's COVID Dashboard. This COVID dashboard is updated by 3:00 pm each school day. This dashboard can also be found on our website.
We've received a few questions about our dashboard, so I wanted to provide an explanation for everyone. Click here for an explanation of our COVID data.
School Lunches
Riverwalk Academy is a "bring your own lunch" school where students are encouraged to bring their own lunches. We do offer a fee-based lunch program that is not income-contingent. Our fee-based lunch program is provided by Golden Corral. For more information about this option, please click here.
