A few words from Mr. Jelks...
Dear LIS Families,
At LIS, we want all students to be mindful of their choices throughout the year in terms of how they might make other people feel. As we move into October and start to think about Halloween, and in keeping with the LIS value of Celebrating Diversity (which includes cultural and gender diversity…) we wanted to support you in supporting your children in making appropriate choices for their costumes. Don't forget o checkout the Halloween costume section.
Lastly, please ensure that your child dresses appropriately for the weather as we head into the colder months. Layering up and wearing suitable outerwear will help keep them comfortable and ready to learn.
Huy'ch'qa,
Dionte Jelks
Principal

This year, we, at Ladysmith Intermediate School, would like to invite you to Pitch Black Productions’ thrilling Hallowe’en radio theatre drama production, DARK WHISPERS.
The evening show will take place on the school’s stage in the gym on Wednesday, October 30th. The doors to the school will open at 6:10 PM and the show will start at 6:30 PM. The performance should end at approximately 8:00 PM. Ticket order forms are attached to this newsletter or you can find it on Mr. Michalopoulos’ drama website at https://pitchblackdrama.weebly.com/. (If you cannot print out the order form, please send your child to see Mr. Michalopoulos next week to pick up a paper copy.)
1) Tickets are FREE and must be pre-ordered. You cannot get tickets at the performance. Please only order the number of tickets needed. Donations will be accepted at the door to help cover costs of future drama productions this year. We may run out of tickets at any time so please order early. 2) Some of the sound effects and storylines can be intense and scary.
We are asking NOT to bring sensitive students or young children (under Grade 4) to the performance. 3) All students must be accompanied by an adult at all times and cannot attend the show by themselves. 4) Your ticket order form must be handed in to your child’s teacher BY THURSDAY, OCTOBER THE 24th. Tickets will be sent home with your child on Tuesday, October 29th. Please bring your tickets to the performance as they are needed for entry to ensure we are not over our capacity for the show. We hope to see you at... DARK WHISPERS
Thinking ahead to Halloween
LIS is committed to creating and supporting a positive climate in our school community, that fosters and promotes equity, inclusivity and celebrates diversity.
Halloween is a great time to dress up and have fun with costumes. At LIS, we want to promote respect, inclusion and empathy for all individuals. As students and staff select Halloween costumes, we encourage everyone to reflect critically, be mindful of cultural appropriation and create welcoming school environments for all. A clown, a Harry Potter wizard, a clown, a puppy, a hotdog, a Minecraft character, even a dinosaur! However, another person’s culture should never be our costume.
We strive to ensure that our students see themselves and their classmates reflected in their studies. Our students and families should expect their interactions within our school community to leave them feeling safe, welcomed, included and accepted for who they are.
The following are suggested questions to reflect on when choosing a costume to avoid being disrespectful or offensive. Your conversations at home on this topic directly help to support our school’s efforts to create and maintain an equitable and inclusive learning environment:
- Is my costume making fun or offensive towards a group of people, their culture or religion?
- Does my costume reinforce jokes and stereotypes about certain groups, cultures or religions?
- Am I altering my skin colour, facial/body features to make it darker or like a particular race, ethnicity, or cultural group?
- Am I dressing up as a culture or borrowing from a religion that is not my own or is not part of my background?
- Do I understand and respect the history or tradition of the culture that I am borrowing my costume from?
Costume considerations to be safe at school:
Costumes must not:
– Impair vision or breathing,
– Present a trip hazard to the wearer or the bystander;
– Represent disfiguring injury or, to put it bluntly, “blood and guts”;
– Promote themes or activities inappropriate for a elementary school;
– Be revealing or suggestive;
– Include weapons or replica weapons;
– Require staff to apply or remove costume pieces and/or make-up
There aren’t any known active pertussis cases within the school-age population in SD68 at this time; however there has been an increase in pertussis cases within Island Health and across the province; therefore, we are encouraging families to check their child’s immunization status and book an immunization appointment as needed.

Attendance
We ask parents/guardians to call the school before 9:00 am at (250) 245-3351 or email Info.LI@sd68.bc.ca to notify the school of your child’s absence. Please follow up with a note to your child’s teacher when your child returns to school so the teacher can address any missed work, homework issues, etc. Also a reminder that if students need to leave early, they should be signed out in the main office.
School Closure
The following is a reminder about the NLPS school closure procedure for students.
If schools are closed due to snow, or any other weather-related problems, announcements will be made on local radio stations (WOLF 106.9 FM, WAVE 102.3 FM, and 91.7 COAST FM) by 7 a.m., or earlier, on the day of the closure. Please do not call the radio station – tune in and listen for the announcements, which will be made on a regular basis.
In addition, the district will post the information on the district’s website, Twitter, Facebook, and mobile app. Families may also receive a message through the School Messenger notification system via phone, email, or text. Please keep in mind, however, that there may be situations where this is not always possible, for example, power outages or technical problems. The most reliable method is to listen to the local radio stations.
