We hope everyone enjoyed their Spring Break and took the time to relax, reflect, and reenergize before we finish the school year strong. As we prepare to get back into the classrooms on April 2, let's take a moment to look back on some extraordinary moments of Trimester 2 and get excited about the amazing memories we'll make during the final weeks of the 2023-24 school year.

Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123 Celebrates 1-23 Day

January 23 is a special date for Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123 as 1-23 Day is an opportunity to show gratitude for the learning community in a fun and meaningful way. Staff members enjoyed a special breakfast from the Great American Bagel and were given matching district shirts with an empowering message printed on the back: "If we don't have each other, we don't have anything..."

Successful OLHMS Newsies Jr. Play!

From October, Ms. Hughes and Ms. Kennedy have been preparing their cast and crew members for a play they will always remember and cherish. Last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, our Newsies Jr. cast performed for their teachers, family members, loved ones, and friends.

Successful Lady Mustang Season!

Our Lady Mustang program showcased their talent in the 2023 SWIC Conference Tournament. In the second round of the tournament, our 6/7th grade Lady Mustangs played Grissom. When our OLHMS Ladies went head to head with Grissom, they battled and won by six points.

Empowering Students for a Year of Growth!

In the spirit of a fresh start, second grade students embraced the tradition of making a New Year's resolutions. Students made academic goals and personal goals on what they wanted to work on this year! One activity student's loved participating in was the one word challenge.

Covington Community Comes Together Through Art

From Pre-K to 5th grade, everyone had the opportunity to become involved in an art project outside of Nicole Petschenko's preschool classroom. The preschoolers recently engaged in a unit on boxes, investigating geometry, literacy, science, social studies, technology and the arts. Students also created projects with their families and presented them to the class.

Why do we celebrate 100 days of school?

100 days, 2400 hours, and 144,000 minutes. Why do we celebrate 100 days of school? This marks a point in the year where students are more than half-way through the 180 day school year. It is a time to reflect on all the learning that has taken place so far.

Red Carpet Reading Night

Thursday was a Red Carpet Reading Night and official ribbon cutting for the new Hannum Media Center. Media specialists, Mrs. Lazinek and Mrs. Keblusek had the honors of cutting the ribbon. Mrs. Doornbos stated that it was a well awaited renovation since the previous library had remained unchanged since she was a student at Hannum.

Future Friday

To celebrate District 123 Kindness Week, students were asked to participate in a very fun spirit week. Students dressed in school spirit wear, wore red and pink for Valentine's Day, and even wore their favorite hat. The best day of the spirit week, however, was Future Friday.

Hometown's Special Guests

Hometown opened it's doors to some very special guests on Friday January 26. Moms, dads, aunts, uncles, sisters, friends were invited to spend the morning with their student. The day began at 8:45, when adults were welcome into classrooms and participated in morning meeting.

Kolmar Couldn't Be Prouder of Their Kindergarten Warrior!

Cancer absolutely messed with the wrong kid and the wrong family. Patrick is a kindergartener at Kolmar who has been battling cancer for the past few years and he has successfully completed his treatment. To celebrate the end of his treatment and to show him how proud of him the community is, he had a special arrival to school on Friday, February 16th.

Kolmar 4th Graders Visit the Shedd Aquarium

The Kolmar 4th graders recently took a field trip to the Shedd Aquarium. They had a wonderful day exploring the aquarium and seeing all the different animals and exhibits. The highlight of the day was the dolphin show they got to see! The students absolutely loved it!

Sward's Drama Club Presents..."The Case of the Missing Socks"

On Thursday, January 25th, Sward staff and students enjoyed a dress rehearsal performance by our very own Sward Drama Club. Under the guidance of Mrs. Keblusek and Mrs. Bishop, 4th and 5th grade students in the Drama Club prepared, practiced and finally performed their long awaited show "The Case of the Missing Socks," a sci-fi mystery about a town plagued by missing socks.

We want to hear about our alumni's successes in high school, college, and beyond! As our students graduate from D123 and move 4-Ward, we want to stay connected and hear about all the journeys taken in "tomorrow's world." Tell us stories from the classroom, the athletic field, the stage, the culinary lab, extracurricular activities, volunteer experiences, and everywhere in between.
