MCAS Parent Information - State Testing Collaboration for Your Child's Success
As we approach assessment season with Iready and the upcoming state testing period, I wanted to reach out to emphasize the significance of this assessment and the crucial role that collaboration between parents and educators plays in ensuring your child's success.
District and State Assessments provides us with valuable insights into your child's academic progress and helps us tailor our instructional approaches to better meet their needs. The results not only reflect individual achievements but also contribute to the overall evaluation of our school's educational effectiveness. Therefore, we must work together to support your child during this important period.
Here are a few ways in which you can assist in preparing your child for the upcoming state tests:
Establish a Supportive Environment: Ensure that your child has a quiet and comfortable space for studying at home. Minimize distractions and encourage a positive attitude towards learning.
Regular Homework and Study Sessions: Encourage your child to complete homework assignments and engage in regular study sessions. Consistent practice reinforces classroom learning and boosts confidence.
Healthy Lifestyle Choices: A well-balanced diet, sufficient sleep, and regular exercise contribute significantly to cognitive function. Please help your child maintain a healthy lifestyle during this testing period.
Open Communication: Keep the lines of communication open with your child's teacher. If you have any concerns or questions, do not hesitate to reach out. We are here to support your child's academic journey.
Positive Reinforcement: Celebrate your child's efforts and achievements, both big and small. Positive reinforcement helps build confidence and motivation.
It is our shared commitment to your child's success that makes a significant impact on their educational journey. We believe that by working together, we can create an environment where every student can reach their full potential.
If you have any questions or if there is anything specific you would like to discuss regarding your child's preparation for the state tests, please feel free to contact me or your child's teacher.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Butler Celebrates Women's History Month
“I am a woman / Phenomenally / Phenomenal woman / That’s me.” – Maya Angelou
Womens History Month:
This month, we are directing our attention towards celebrating the remarkable women who have emerged as trailblazers and history-makers both within and beyond our school community. Throughout history, women have made an enduring impact on education, contributing significantly and indispensably.
Despite historical limitations and the oversight of their roles, women have played pivotal parts in shaping educational systems, advocating for equal access to education, and driving advancements in educational theory and practice. Mothers, in particular, serve as educators from the very beginning. From the moment a child is born, their mother assumes the role of their first teacher, nurturing them, providing guidance, and imparting knowledge that will profoundly influence their future.
Mothers play a critical role in their child's early development, teaching them fundamental skills such as walking and talking, while also instilling values that contribute to shaping their character. The influence of women in education extends beyond the familial sphere, as they actively contribute to the broader educational landscape in various ways. Here are some ways in which women have contributed to education:
Pioneering Educators:
- Mary Wollstonecraft: An 18th-century writer and philosopher, Wollstonecraft advocated for women's education and wrote "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman," challenging prevailing ideas about women's intellectual capabilities.
- Emma Willard: In the 19th century, she founded the Troy Female Seminary (now Emma Willard School) and worked to promote higher education for women.
Advocacy for Women's Education:
- Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton: These suffragists were also advocates for women's education, recognizing that access to education was crucial for gender equality.
- Maria Montessori: An Italian physician and educator, Montessori developed the Montessori method, which revolutionized early childhood education and emphasized self-directed learning.
Educational Reformers:
- Dorothy Vaughn, Katherine Johnson, and Mary Jackson: African-American women mathematicians at NASA whose contributions were highlighted in the book and movie "Hidden Figures," they overcame racial and gender barriers, making significant contributions to space exploration.
Founders of Educational Institutions:
- Mary Lyon: Founded Mount Holyoke Female Seminary (now Mount Holyoke College) in 1837, one of the first institutions for the higher education of women in the United States.
- Sophia Jex-Blake: A British physician and feminist, she campaigned for women's access to medical education and was a pioneer in opening medical schools to women.
Leaders in Education Policy:
- Margaret Spellings: Served as the U.S. Secretary of Education, contributing to education policy and reform.
- Malala Yousafzai: A Pakistani activist for female education, she survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban and continues to advocate for girls' education globally.
Educational Theorists:
- Jeanne Chall: A psychologist and educator, she made significant contributions to the understanding of literacy development in children.
- Bell Hooks: An influential cultural critic and educator, hooks has written extensively on the intersection of race, gender, and education.
Contemporary Leaders:
- Condoleezza Rice: Served as the U.S. Secretary of State and has been involved in education reform efforts.
- Angela Duckworth: A psychologist and educator, Duckworth is known for her work on grit and its role in academic success.
These examples represent just a small fraction of the countless women who have contributed to education. Women continue to play vital roles in shaping educational practices, policies, and outcomes around the world.
Thank you!
