Getting Ready for School
Here's a few tips to help ease the transition to the new school year.
Adjust your child’s summer sleep schedule to a school schedule. At least one or two weeks before school starts, move bedtime and wake-up time up by 15-minute increments every few days until the desired schedule is reached.
Remind kids that almost everyone feels a little nervous on the first day of school. Naming and describing an emotion and letting children know you understand how they feel can help them feel more in control over their feelings instead of feeling overwhelmed by them.
Talk to your child about how they might handle challenging situations, even if they are not likely to happen. For example, if your son is worried about getting lost in a new school, help him problem solve by creating a plan about what he would do if that did happen so he feels more prepared and confident.

Note from Our HSD Nurses
Hello HSD Families,
Happy start of the school year. Students are often participating in sports and other activities that could lead to an orthopedic injury. Our District Nurse Team wanted to reach out and give you a quick update on our orthopedic injury return to school plan!
An orthopedic injury can range from minor sprains to broken bones or even surgeries. Please be sure to let the office staff at the school know right away about any orthopedic injury that occurs during the year or planned surgery your child may have. Please be sure to let the office staff know of any accommodations or restrictions that are required when they return to school. Your district nurse may be following up with you and your student depending on any safety concerns.
If your student was seen by a medical provider, then a copy of the orders would be appreciated and needed if there are activity restrictions for your student, especially weight bearing status. A copy of the chart notes or discharge information is adequate, but sometimes we need an actual order or note from the medical provider to return to previous activities.
If your student is returning to school with crutches or a wheelchair, then the District Nurse and school Physical Therapist may need to be involved and medical provider orders will most likely be needed related to specific activity restrictions.
Our goal is that students stay injury free. Sharing our process with you and staff ensures that your students have a smooth transition back to school in the event of returning to school after an orthopedic injury.
Thank you,
Hillsboro School District Nurse Team
Health Management Plan
The letter explains the process for sharing information on their students HMP with staff and contacting the nurse for health updates, other wise the current HMP will be reinstated for next school year.
Birthday Treats
We kindly request that parents do not send treats or snacks to school for birthday celebrations. This promotes inclusivity, healthier choices, and focused learning. Some students have dietary restrictions or allergies that prevent them from enjoying certain treats. By not having treats, we can ensure that valuable class time is not disrupted and that our students can fully engage in their lessons.
Community Curriculum Advisory Committee (CCAC)
The Hillsboro School District is currently accepting applications for its Community Curriculum Advisory Committee (CCAC).
The CCAC serves as a resource to the Board and Superintendent in setting the direction for long-range curriculum development and assisting in the development of the school’s curriculum and instructional programs. Members are appointed to two-year terms by the Board of Directors. Learn more here and apply by 5 PM on Thursday, Sep. 13, 2024
