Proviso Senior Sean Pugh Honored for Show of Sportsmanship
Forest Park, IL — Proviso Math and Science Academy (PMSA) senior and Proviso Township swim team captain, Sean Pugh, was recognized at the February Board of Education meeting for an inspiring display of sportsmanship during the Senior Day swim meet against Thornton High School.
During the 200 free relay, Sean helped lead his team to a first-place finish. Shortly after the race, he noticed a swimmer from Thornton struggling to complete his leg of the event. Without hesitation, Sean entered the swimmer’s lane, offered words of encouragement, and swam alongside him until he finished the race. His selfless act drew cheers from spectators, coaches, and swimmers on both teams.
"Sportsmanship is about showing love and care because you never know what the other person is going through," Sean explained. "Everyone should feel supported, especially on a night as special as Senior Night. Helping him finish the race was the right thing to do."
Sean’s mother and coach, Alice Bey-Pugh, who was also recognized at the Board meeting, praised her son’s leadership and empathy. “Respect is a value I emphasize with my team,” Alice said. “Sean’s actions are a reflection of that. I wasn’t surprised by what he did. It’s who he is. He’s always had a strong sense of responsibility and kindness.”
In addition to excelling in the pool, Sean balances a demanding academic schedule that includes multiple Advanced Placement (AP) classes in math and psychology. He is currently considering attending Howard University, Michigan State University, or Illinois College, where he plans to continue swimming while pursuing a pre-law major with aspirations of becoming a criminal defense attorney.
Sean’s leadership has helped build camaraderie within the Proviso Township swim team, a small but competitive group of 15 swimmers. Despite competing against larger schools, the team celebrated several first- and second-place finishes this season, with two members earning full scholarships to swim at the collegiate level.
“I’m proud of my team for what we’ve accomplished this season,” Sean added. “It’s not just about winning; it’s about improving every day and supporting one another.”
Sean’s act of sportsmanship serves as a powerful reminder of the values at the core of Proviso’s athletic programs—integrity, respect, and leadership.
