TEACHER TALKS
Meet Ms. Anderson!
College: I attended Saint Joseph's University and obtained my bachelor's in Early Childhood Education. I am currently receiving my master's degree in Educational Leadership with the principal certification at the same school.
Years Teaching: I taught preschool for 5 years with the Philadelphia school district. I wanted to spread my wings and try something new. Prior to that I was working in my grandmother's daycare for a number of years and that's how I fell in love with teaching.
About Me: I love to go to Penn's Landing and sit by the water during my free time. I am a big foodie, so I am always in the mood to try something new and exciting. Lastly, I wrote a book and I am currently looking for a publisher.
COUNSELOR'S CORNER
November is National Career Development Month. A crucial first step in a child’s career development is understanding what a career is, and what career and job options are out there! It is never too early to start having these conversations with your child.
Grades 1 and 2 learned what a career is, and watched the video below of 100 kids sharing what they want to be when they grow up!
100 Kids Tell Us What They Want to Be When They Grow Up | 100 Kids | HiHo Kids
In grades 3-5, we began completing our Naviance Career Artifacts for this school year, required by the state of Pennsylvania. 3rd graders learned about how their strengths, interests, and passions, can help them choose a career one day. 4th grade learned about military careers, and 5th grade learned about entrepreneurship!
November 13th was World Kindness Day! Please talk with your child about the importance of being kind to others. Even small acts of kindness can make a HUGE impact!

NURSE'S NEWS
As we move into cold and flu season, please be sure that if your child has a fever, vomiting, or diarrhea they must remain home for 24 hours after their symptoms have resolved without medication. If your child is on an attendance plan, they should still stay home if they have the above symptoms and a doctor’s note should be obtained and turned in to excuse the absence. Additionally, if your child needs to take any medication when they’re sick, such as an inhaler or cold medicine, please review the district’s medication policy. Students are NOT permitted to carry medication on them without a doctor’s order even if it is over the counter. If your child only needs an inhaler when they are sick, please fill out the appropriate paperwork now and bring in the medication, so it does not turn into an emergency.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me!

Physical Education News
Hello Stonehurst superstars:
In physical education, students learned all about their pulse (heart rate). Students have learned how to find their pulse, and how to calculate their heart rate. 4th and 5th graders are using pulse to set goals for hitting their target heart rate while exercising. We will also learn the heart health benefits of regular physical activity.
The Mr. B. beard challenge has come to an end. It came down to the wire, but in the end the prize went to Mr. Ellison's 1st grade homeroom. Congrats to all the students in Mr. Ellison's class, and here is what they chose for Coach B’s hair and beard design:

News from the Music Room
In Music Class, we continue to start off every class with our Hello Song. We continue to work on rhythm and steady beat, and now we have begun adding pitch. We are slowly learning solfege syllables, which is do re mi fa sol la ti do. It is a transferable skill they can use to read just about any music.
First grade has been working on singing fast and slow, and high and low. They sang some spooky songs for the end of October, and focused on learning about form. They just recently learned their first two solfege syllables: sol and mi. In the future, they will begin learning about rhythm.
Second grade has been very busy! They have been singing, playing passing games, and dancing. They have been working on pitch and rhythm, learning ta, ta-di, sh, ta-ah, mi, sol, and la. Most impressively, second grade has been learning how to dictate rhythms. First, they sing it. Then, they can write it down. They are getting very good!
Third grade has just learned a new rhythm: takadimi! They also have been working on learning new pitches mi, sol, and la. They, along with second grade, enjoy our new solfege game: SolLaMi. In this game, they echo every pattern that Miss H sings except the pattern sol la mi. If she tricks them into singing it, she gets a point. If they stay silent after hearing sol la mi, they win a point!
Fourth and fifth grade have just started instruments! They have been playing rhythm sticks, xylophones, and metallophones. They also learned mi, sol, and la earlier in October. As they go on, they will be learning more complex rhythms and solfege syllables.

This month our bilingual buddies read a book about pumpkins to our newcomer students. Newcomer students received their very own pumpkin. Their buddies helped them write adjectives about their pumpkin. They finished by adding a cute face to their pumpkins.
Multilingual mentors met for the first time this month. Our mentors Angie, Genesis, Wilmer and Flor reviewed math activities. They discussed strategies on how to use their math resources to mentor younger students in the first and second grade. Multilingual mentors also created their very own bag to store their materials. They can’t wait to start mentoring!
5th grade student Mayely Maite Guanuchi Vasquez (Bilingual Buddy) took student Brandon Mizhqiuiri on an adapted welcome walk. She showed him the cafeteria, water fountain, gym, library, sensory wall and walked him to his classroom. His mom seemed happy to talk to Maite in Spanish. Kids did a great job!
