DISTRICT SPOTLIGHT
Spotlight on Urbana: A little SPOT of Emotion
Urbana Elementary K-2 classrooms have searched for the right social-emotional learning kit and have had a lot of success with the A Little SPOT of Emotion series by Diane Alber. The books and plush stuffed toys help children recognize feelings in themselves and their peers. These books and toys teach about different emotions and facial expressions so you know how to name your feelings. Once children can recognize and name the emotion, they can learn to manage their emotions in a healthy way. The Principal and counselors all have a set of plush stuffed emotional representations in their offices and use them to help students express themselves better in certain situations. They find that the conversations with the students are more meaningful and productive in conflict resolution.
REGION SPOTLIGHT
Career and technical education (CTE) serves as a vital bridge between theoretical knowledge and practical, industry-relevant skills in secondary education. By seamlessly integrating academic concepts with hands-on training, CTE programs empower students with the technical expertise, certifications, and real-world experiences necessary to embark on rewarding careers immediately after high school or pursue further education. These programs offer invaluable opportunities for all students, including those with disabilities, to explore their interests, cultivate critical competencies, and gain practical experience through internships, apprenticeships, and work-based learning opportunities. By aligning education with industry demands, CTE nurtures a pipeline of skilled professionals, fostering economic growth and competitiveness while enhancing students' employability and preparing them for success in the ever-evolving job market.
This past year, the SST6 and four regional career tech planning districts collaborated in a community of practice. Participating districts utilized the Self-Review Tool for Serving Students with Disabilities in Career-Technical Pathways to evaluate their current practices. Based on this assessment, the districts are currently drafting communication plans to enhance their ability to effectively serve all students, particularly those with disabilities, in CTE programs. Throughout the upcoming school year, these districts will review and refine their draft communication plans in consultation with associated school districts within their respective career tech planning regions. By strengthening communication and collaboration among career tech planning districts and their associated districts, this initiative aims to promote the effective implementation and long-term sustainability of high-quality CTE programs that provide equitable access and support for all students.
