The Crawford Connection
October 2024
Dear Crawford Families,
We hope everyone has enjoyed their fall break and we look forward to seeing our students tomorrow!
Over the break, the results of the 2023-2024 Kentucky Summative Assessment were released to the public. Our school received a rating of yellow, an improvement from our previous rating of orange. Our overall index increased by 17 points, we grew in all four categories, and we exited TSI for all previously identified student groups. These improvements are a result of the hard work of our staff and students at CMS, and it is a privilege to celebrate this success with our community.
Our students have been doing a great job following expectations and working hard in their classes. We will continue to teach and practice our school expectations, focusing on that with students as we return tomorrow.
The end of the first nine weeks is quickly upon us. The grading period ends on October 18. Please contact teachers about any missing assignments to make sure content has been mastered and to help improve grades. You can always check your student's progress on Infinite Campus at:
https://fayetteky.infinitecampus.org/campus/portal/parents/fayette.jsp.
We look forward to another great month with our Crawford students and families, and hope to see you at our Fall Conference during the “Tricks & Treats” event on Tuesday, October 29th at 6:00-7:30. More information about this event is included in this newsletter.
Sincerely,
Dr. Trimble, Mrs. Piatt, Ms. Shockey, and Mr. Castillo

Coming up later this month, we will host our CMS Fall Conference during the “Tricks & Treats” event on Tuesday, October 29th at 6:00-7:30. Teachers will be sharing some tips and tricks for academic and behavioral success, while student extracurricular groups will be hosting a Halloween hallway of silly and spooky scenes. Bring your goody bags to collect all the fun things!

Detention
Students have the opportunity to earn four points every day in each class for following our school-wide LEADer expectations. That is a total of 160 points every week. When students do not meet the LEADer expectations, they lose points (infractions). Each week student infractions are tracked through eOS:
- Students who lose 12-18 points within a one-week period (Monday-Friday) will be assigned a 1.5 hour detention to be served the following Friday from 4:15-5:45.
- Students who lose 19-24 points within a one-week period (Monday-Friday) will be assigned a two hour detention to be served the following Friday from 4:15-6:15.
- Students who lose 25 or more points within a one-week period (Monday-Friday) will be assigned a Saturday detention to be served the following Saturday from 9:30 am - 12:00 pm.
- Points lost will be adjusted for short weeks and communicated with students and families.
Students may also receive after school detention or Saturday detention as a consequence for an office discipline referral. Families will be responsible for picking their student up on time at the end of detention.
Tardies
It is important for students to be on time to each class so they do not miss instruction.
If a student arrives 1-7 minutes after the bell to any class without a valid note/pass, they will be admitted to class and marked tardy in IC.
Administration will run a weekly report of tardies to class and assign consequences based on the following guidelines:
2-5 times a week: Admin/Parent/Student phone conference
6-9 times a week: 1.5 hour detention
10+ times a week: Saturday school
If a student arrives 8+ minutes after the bell to any class without a valid note/pass, they will be admitted to class, marked tardy and receive an office discipline referral for skipping
1st ODR for skipping: 1.5 hour detention
2nd ODR for skipping: 2 hour detention
3rd+ ODR for skipping: Saturday School and referral to student support team

Device Free Learning Environment
Expectation:
All students must place cell phones, earbuds/headphones, and other electronic devices in their lockers when they first arrive to their pod.
All adults will model appropriate device usage (not wearing earbuds, not using devices during class or in the hallway, etc…)
Procedure When Expectation is Not Met:
After 9:05, if a student is in possession of an electronic device, the teacher will call RESET.
The device will be confiscated by administration and returned to the student at the end of the school day.
If a student is in possession of an electronic device in the hallway or a time not in class, report to administration.
Violations:
1st Violation:
Admin collects, tracks on form, and returns to the student at the end of the day
Admin calls the family to inform of cell phone policy and steps
2nd Violation:
Admin collects, tracks on form, and returns to the student at the end of the day
Teacher calls the family to notify of the second violation. The first call from admin will be in PLP so teacher can reference date if necessary.
3rd Violation:
Admin collects, tracks on form, and returns to student at the end of the day
Admin calls the family to notify of the third violation.
Student will turn in the phone to GL Admin for the next 3 school days.
Students will turn the device in at arrival and will get it back at dismissal.
4th+ Violation:
Admin collects, tracks on form, and returns to student at the end of the day
Admin calls family to notify of violation.
Student will turn in the phone to GL Admin for the next 4+ school days.
GL Counselor provides a reteaching lesson during elective class.
Non-Compliant Students:
If a student refuses to give up cell phone or device to admin, administrators will follow FCPS Student Code of Conduct for failure to follow staff instructions.
Backpacks and Lockers
We will be using lockers this year and our expectation is that phones and non-clear backpacks are secured in them all day. We require students to keep their backpacks, large bags, and purses in their lockers, unless they are clear. Clear backpacks/bags/purses help ensure that students are not bringing things they are not supposed to into their classes (such as snacks, drinks, and other contraband). Doing this provides an environment for students to focus on instruction rather than external distractions.
Since each FCPS student is assigned a chromebook, this eliminates multiple textbooks needing to be carried. Students will be permitted to use their lockers upon arrival, at lunch (if necessary), and at dismissal. Any other times, students will need to have permission from an adult.
Crawford Daily Schedule
The lunch period is highlighted in green on the schedule and is 75 minutes with 25 of it allotted for lunch. Your child’s teacher will communicate specific lunch times with students. We also will have a 30 minute class called Leader in Me this year.
