Happy Friday and Happy October!
I love October! I love the crisp morning air, the falling leaves, and the promise of a new season. With fall comes a new season of Middle School Sports Program sports. Volleyball starts soon and we are in need of a coach! If you love volleyball and middle school students, please reach out to Mackey Powers at the Wheat Ridge Recreation center or to us!
Thank you for helping us ensure that students were present for October count. We are grateful for your partnership in helping your children to maximize their time at school. Did you know that:
- Students should miss no more than 9 days of school each year to stay engaged, successful and on track to graduation.
- By 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school.
- By 9th grade, attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.
- Missing 10%, or 2 days a month, over the course of the school year, can affect a student’s academic success.
Next Wednesday is our first Information Night of the year. If you have friends or neighbors who are looking for more information about Everitt, please send them our way! I am also doing tours weekly on Wednesday afternoons at 2:30. If that time does not work for people, have them give me a call or send me an email and I will schedule a different time for them.
Fall Family/Student/Teacher Conferences are coming up soon on October 15th and 16th from 4:30-6:45. The conferences are an open format and you are welcome to come anytime within that window on either day. It is a wonderful time to hear about how your child is doing in their classes, get to know their teachers a little bit, and find out ways to support them at home. Please plan to have your child attend conferences with you so that they can be part of these important conversations about their learning.
Please see below for more information regarding a conversation I would love for you to have with your child about vaping and e-cigarettes. It is something I have been thinking a lot about as our wonderful parent/guardian and staff group has been doing the book study on 10 to 25: The Science of Motivating Young People by David Yeager. If you are interested in exploring this topic more with other parents/guardians, please join us on Wednesday evenings from 5:00-6:00 pm. We will resume in two weeks.
Thank you for supporting and believing in your neighborhood school. It is our privilege to partner with you!

Apply Now: Student Benefits Application for 2024-2025
Thanks to Healthy School Meals for All (HSMA), the district will continue to provide all students with one breakfast and one lunch daily at no cost through the 2024-25 school year, regardless of income eligibility.
.
Though meals are free for all Jeffco students, families are still encouraged to visit SchoolCafé and complete a Student Benefits Application. While this application does not determine your student’s access to meals under the HSMA program, it may help their school secure additional state or federal funding. Additionally, your student(s) may be eligible for other benefits, such as school-related fees or testing fees (Outdoor Lab fees, field trips, class fees, transportation, district fees), based on information provided on the application.
Student Benefits Applications are now available on SchoolCafé for the 2024-25 school year. If you need a paper application, please contact Jeffco’s Free & Reduced Lunch Specialist, Lorena Gomez-Vazquez, at 303-982-6916 with additional questions. Visit the Free & Reduced Meals webpage to learn more.
Thank you for your support in nourishing our learners: our future. We look forward to serving your student(s) healthy and delicious meals this school year.
Vaping Conversations
In the book for our book study, 10 to 25: The Science of Motivating Young People, David Yeager begins by talking about the ineffectiveness of the early campaigns to reduce youth tobacco use. He uses the story as a basis to help the reader understand the impact of the desire that all people between the ages of 10 and 25 have for status and respect. Reading that section of the book made me think a lot about the use of e-cigarettes by young people. I know that all of us want the precious young people in our lives to be healthy individuals in every way.
While 3.5% of middle school students reported regular e-cigarette use according to the 2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey, a much higher percentage of high school students admitted to regular use. This 3.5% feels pretty accurate for our Everitt students. While most of our students are not vaping, it is important that we, as parents, have regular conversations with our children about vaping. I know we are all aware of the risks of vaping for kids. Nicotine in vapes can harm the parts of the brain that control attention, learning, mood, and impulse control. Vaping can also cause inflammatory processes and depress immune function in the lungs. It can also lead to chronic bronchitis and make it harder to fight off infections. Research also shows that adolescents who use nicotine may be more likely to use other drugs in the future. It is also becoming more common for cartridges to be laced with fentanyl which can cause difficulty breathing, sedation, disorientation, slow pulse and low blood pressure, and loss of consciousness.
But the way we have these conversations with our children matters. If we approach them in the way that we were approached in our youth, like the DARE campaign (This is your brain. This is your brain on drugs. Any questions?), we will have similar results. Campaigns that shamed youth for tobacco use actually increased tobacco use among teens. The campaign that shifted tobacco use was the #truth campaign in 2000-2006. Do you remember it? The ads showed teens shining a light on the way big tobacco was doing business. It created an opportunity for young adults to earn status and respect by seeking and calling out the truth.
If you would be willing to join me, I would like to try something as a community. It is no secret that the way vapes and e-cigarettes are advertised (using influencer and celebrity endorsements, bright colors and flavors attractive to kids) is intentional. This link takes you to an article about the 9 strategies that are currently being used by tobacco companies to increase use of e-cigarettes. All of these things are designed to speak to young people's need for status and respect. I would encourage you to look at the advertisements with your child and to have a conversation together about why companies would advertise this way. Our students are so smart, ethical, and capable. I know that your conversation with them will be powerful.
One of the things I love most about our community is that we have the same goals: growing smart, healthy, thoughtful, kind kids. Please reach out if you would like to talk more about how to talk about vaping with your child. We are happy to help.

Book Study Opportunity
Our book study on the book 10-25:The Science of Motivating Young People by David Yeager. The book is about how to help young people between the ages of 10 and 25 to feel inspired, enthusiastic, and ready to contribute rather than discouraged, outraged or overwhelmed. I am loving the book so far and I think you will too. It is equally powerful for parents, educators, mentors, coaches, and managers. We are going to be meeting on Wednesday evenings at 5:00 starting next week. Next week, October 9th, we will not meet due to Information Night. So you have two weeks to get caught up on reading! Purchase the book, read chapter 4, and join us!

WAYS TO HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR EVERITT PTA:
- Does your employer provide matching funds or are they looking for a community non-profit to donate to?
Everitt PTA is a 501c3 non-profit and would be happy to talk to your employer or help with any paperwork needed. While we focus on community building and not fundraising, additional funds could be put to good use helping to outfit more classrooms with the SmartBoard technology your kids have used in some, and all rooms can make great use of them!
- Have you linked your King Soopers Community Rewards yet?
Help raise funds for Everitt just by doing your grocery shopping! Everitt PTA is enrolled in the King Soopers Community Rewards Program. This is a great way to support the school without spending additional money, all you have to do is enroll and King Soopers will give back to Everitt! 🍎🥦🌽🥕
• Go to www.kingsoopers.com
Once logged into your King Soopers or City Market account go to My account ~ Community Rewards ~ search for Everitt Middle School PTA either by name or FT620 and then click Enroll. New users will need to create an account which requires some basic information, a valid email address and a loyalty card.
RENEW YOUR EVERITT PTA MEMBERSHIP:
Make your fall to-do list shorter by signing up now for your 2024-2025 PTA Membership. Dues are just $15 and allow us to be part of the state and national PTA networks and have seed money for our PTA projects.
