Parkside Post
April 2024
Greetings Parkside Bullfrogs!
Are you ready to see your child's artwork and hear them sing? Please join us on April 16 for our Art & Music Family Night from 5:30-7:30! See the flyer below for more information!
Report Cards were sent home last week! If you have questions about your child's progress, please set up a conference with the teacher. You can meet in person, over the phone, or via Webex.
April has twenty-two full days of school so please be sure your child is present and ready to learn for each of them! Students will be reviewing, preparing for, and taking spring assessments starting this month. Getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and being at school on time will help them do their best!
There is helpful information and links below, so please take a few moments to look through the information in the newsletter. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher or call the front office. We are here to help!

MORNING DROP OFF REMINDER
Please pull all the way forward when dropping off your child in the morning. This helps us get more students unloaded in a timely manner. Students should not be dropped off until you pull up and are parked at a pole. The curve at the back of the line is NOT a drop off location. Please follow these expectations for the safety of all students and staff!
Save The Dates

COACHES' CORNER
Literacy & Learning
Writing is in full bloom at PSE. Our 4th and 5th graders are getting prepared for the FAST Writing assessment, and as parents, you are a key to their success. Kick-start their day with a wholesome breakfast and ensure they get plenty of rest—it makes a world of difference! Encourage your budding writer, no matter their grade level, with exciting activities like free-writing time or journaling their daily adventures. These simple yet fun practices enhance their writing skills and spark creativity and self-expression. Here's a fun fact: did you know that reading just 20 minutes a day can help your child learn thousands of new words each year? Please encourage your child to read for 20 minutes daily, and together, let's make April a month filled with reading, writing, and family fun!
Math This Month
End of year testing is coming up quickly. Now is a great time to work on skills with your child at home to help prepare them for their test. Below is a list of math activities you can do with your child to best support them.
K-2: addition, subtraction, counting, skip counting, word problems
3-5: multiplication, division, word problems, fractions
Here are a couple games to play to help increase fluency of math facts:
Slap: Spread out your flashcards on the table face up. One person is the caller who will call out the answer (i.e., sum, difference, product, quotient). The first player to slap the correct card gets to keep it. The player with the most cards wins.
Go Fish: Shuffle a deck of flashcards and deal out 7 cards to each player. The remaining cards will go in a pile face down in the middle. Player 1 will ask an opponent if he/she has a matching flashcard (i.e., sum, difference, product, quotient). The player who is addressed must hand over the requested card if it is in their hand. If not, they say “Go Fish”, and Player 1 draws the top card from the pile. Continue making matches until a player runs out of the flashcards in their hand. Finally, the player with the greatest number of matches wins.
Science at Home
Spring has sprung, and it’s the perfect time to get outside and observe nature. Many of our local plants are blooming, migratory birds are heading back north, and our cold-blooded friends are becoming more active. There is so much for students to see outside! With the return of Daylight savings, it is a perfect opportunity for family walks around the neighborhood after dinner. Consider taking a trip to one of our many local outdoor attractions. My family’s favorites include The Naples Botanical Gardens, Naples Zoo, Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, and The Wonder Gardens in Bonita Springs. If you are looking for a free place to walk around, consider going to one of our many local parks. Eagle Lakes Park is only about ½ mile from PSE! It is a great place to spend the day observing nature. Bring a notebook and some crayons so students can record their observations. If you want to get techy, try downloading the free Audubon Bird Guide app and log the birds that you see.
Leaders of the Week
We will continue to recognize students for exemplifying our PSE Expectations...Prepared to Learn, Show Respect to Ourselves and Others, Be Responsible...We will also be recognizing our Leaders of the Week for modeling the 7 Habits, as part of the Leader in Me Framework. For April, we are focusing on Habit #7: Sharpen the Saw and Habit #1: Be Proactive!

CAR SIGNS!
Please make sure you have a car sign in your vehicle every day. It significantly slows down our dismissal when we have to check IDs and verify approved pick ups. If you do not have a car sign, please come to the front office and we will provide one. You can also request multiple signs if you have different people picking up your child.
Walker Procedures for Kindergarten and First Graders
The safety of our students is a top priority. All kindergarten and 1st grade students who walk home, need to be met at the walker gate by an adult who has the walker tag. Students will not be released without the proper walker tag being presented. If you forget your tag, our staff will call the front office to verify approved pick ups. The person picking up the child must have a photo ID to verify identity, if they don't have the walker tag. Students who walk home with older students, with parent permission, are permitted to leave.
Thank you for partnering with us to make Parkside a safe place for all!
