Points from the Principal
What a great week! We had the Lionheart Experience, and the students loved it. Then, we finished our fall testing and the juniors were very relieved. Now there are only two weeks before exams. Please remind your students to ask their teachers for help if they are struggling in any of their classes.
A Note from Ms. Hanson
Students,
Mrs. Luplow and I are putting on a first hour class competition! On November 1st, bring any item(s) on the SVHS from the Heart Pantry Wish List and receive a point for your class. The more items you bring the more points your class accumulates. The classroom with the most points will win juice and donuts on Friday, November 8th. All students who donate to the pantry and classroom competition will be entered into a drawing for t-shirts which are pictured below in the Wish list flyer. We use these items to help local families in need. Let’s show our community what a Viking Heart looks like!
Thanks! Ms. Hanson and Mrs. Luplow
From The SVHS Pantry
Please help SVHS and SV Community Ed restock our Food Pantry on Friday, November 1st, by participating in our first SVHS “From the Heart” collection. We will be accepting any nonperishable food items, personal hygiene, and household cleaners to help our Swan Valley Families in need. Bring in any of these items and enter your name into a drawing to win a prize! The first hour class that brings in the most items will receive Donuts and Juice!

Words from a Cop
Every Sunday during football season, commentators give some off the wall stat about a player, such as “This quarterback has never lost in 40 degree weather.” I find myself wondering who keeps track of those facts. I certainly do not. I have never paid much attention to statistics. Typically, I use this platform as a way to connect the public with police, and give some insight on why police do some of the things they do. Which is why I do not share statistics in my blurbs.
However, statistics are everywhere, even in police work. If one intersection has more accidents than another, where do you think the stops signs, or traffic lights are going to be placed? If a road has more residents and houses, then the speed limit is probably going to be slower than another. Same goes for crime, or in my position, complaints at the schools. If a certain area has more crime being committed, the greater the police presence will be (or should be).
In short, police presence will be less, when the crime is less. Statistics prove it. Same goes for me at the schools. If there are complaints being made at the same place, at the same time, I’m more than likely going to be present at that place at that time. The fix is very simple; stop bringing attention to yourself (I mean generically, not singling anyone out). If you are doing what you are supposed to be doing, you are much less likely to see police action.
Stay safe, stay vigilant

Law Day News!
Looking for Law Day volunteers!
Law Day is an event in the spring where a Swan Valley team competes against another school team in a mock trial. We are looking for possible jurors, witnesses, and lawyers. We work with an attorney advisor and there will be some after school time needed to meet and prepare starting in January. It is a great experience at
the Saginaw County courthouse to see a real courtroom and its proceedings.
If interested please see Mrs. Nicholas or Mrs. Wiley.
Notes from the Nurse.....
‘Tis the season…respiratory germs are already on the attack! Influenza and COVID-19 are circulating in our school community with symptoms such as fever, cough, congestion, sore throat and body aches. Keep in mind that these germs can be contagious to others up to two days before the onset of symptoms! Infections from Influenza and COVID-19 typically last 5-7 days, with the first 3 days being the most “miserable” in terms of symptoms. Complications of these infections, such as pneumonia, often affect those with high-risk conditions such as asthma, diabetes, obesity, and chronic heart, liver and kidney disease. Immunocompromised people, such as those on steroid therapy or chemotherapy, are also considered high risk for complications and are more likely to be hospitalized with influenza or COVID.
Anti-viral medications are available to help lessen the length of time one may be ill. These anti-viral medications are most helpful if taken within the first 48 hours of symptoms. Vaccination against Influenza and COVID-19 are the best preventative measures. The Influenza vaccine will protect against 3 strains of flu and is recommended for everyone ages 6 months and older. There is good news this season for those with an egg allergy—they too can receive the Influenza vaccine without worry of an allergic reaction! The updated 24-25 COVID vaccine is also recommended for everyone ages 6 months and older. Previous COVID vaccines are no longer used/available. October is a great time to update your seasonal vaccines!! Wishing you a happy and healthy autumn season!
