MINIMUM DAY!
FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Dear Edison Families,
As I wrap up my first year as principal—and my 29th year at Edison—I want to share my heartfelt gratitude for the support and partnership I’ve received from our staff, students, and families. While I’ve worn many hats during my time here, stepping into the role of principal has been a completely new adventure. No two days are the same on an elementary school campus, and I’ve had to pivot, problem-solve, and grow in ways I never imagined. Through it all, I’ve gained an even deeper appreciation for the work our former principal, Ms. Orum, did for 17 years.
Being principal is challenging, but also incredibly rewarding. Having the opportunity to help shape schoolwide experiences—whether by selecting assemblies, supporting teacher learning, developing community events, or enhancing instruction—has been the joy of my year. (Though I will say, responding to 100 emails in a day might be my least favorite part!) Still, every challenge is worth it because of the incredible educational journey we get to offer our students.
This year was filled with remarkable milestones, and I’m thrilled to share some of the highlights with you:
🌟 Edison was recognized as a California Distinguished School—a testament to the dedication and excellence of our entire learning community.
🌎 Our multilingual learners made exceptional progress, with 14 students reclassified as fluent English proficient (RFEP). We also provided targeted Tier 3 reading intervention in both English and Spanish for 25 students and Tier 3 math support for 60 students afterschool through Extended Learning Opportunity Program funds.
🧑🏽🏫 Our PLC (Professional Learning Community) work deepened, with common agreements and consistent implementation of Designated and Integrated ELD schoolwide. We also launched Academic Improvement Plans and offered before-school Academic Vocabulary Classes in English for 22 EL students, as well as after-school tutoring and homework support for another 20.
🧠 Our MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) expanded to include general education counseling services for 22 students—ensuring we support not just academics but the whole child.
📚 Teacher growth and learning continued, including effective PLCs, our first year of Project-Based Learning (PBL), and our second year as a Cotsen Foundation Lab Site. We also proudly participated in the CABE Conference alongside teachers, administrators, parents, and our Bilingual Community Liaison.
🎭 We strengthened our commitment to culturally relevant arts education, offering Theater, Music, and Visual Arts for PreK–5 in Spanish, and Dance for grades 1–5 in both English and Spanish.
🎉 Our community came together through engaging events including two new events: our first ever Bilingual Career Day and our vibrant Multicultural Festival—reminding us how powerful it is when we celebrate our diversity together.
🎓 And of course, our students soared—embracing new ideas, stretching their thinking, and growing by leaps and bounds as they became more confident, creative, and proudly bilingual learners.
It truly takes a village to raise a child, and Edison is that village. Every accomplishment this year reflects the dedication, care, and collaboration of our families, staff, and students. I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve built—and where we’re headed next.
We hope your summer brings time to relax, recharge, and enjoy some well-deserved fun with your loved ones. We’ll be doing the same so we can come back energized for another amazing school year.
With gratitude and excitement for the year to come,
Directora Ipiña
SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Once an eagle always an eagle
One of the most bittersweet parts of being in a school community is that each year, we must say goodbye to some of our beloved members. While we cherish the time we’ve had together, it’s also a joy to see our Eagles spread their wings and soar toward new horizons. This year we say goodbye to ...
Our 5th Graders: As we do every year, we bid farewell to our incredible 5th grade class. They leave Edison with strong academic and bilingual skills, and a mindset rooted in respect and justice. We’re proud of the individuals they’ve become and can’t wait to see all they accomplish in the years ahead.
Geralyn Goodman: Maestra Geralyn has served as a Bilingual Instructional Assistant at Edison for over a decade. Her passion for history and literature, and her deep love for teaching, have left a lasting impact on our community. She will be retiring at the end of this school year.
Kristen Furano: Nurse Kristen became our school nurse just before the pandemic—an incredibly challenging time to step into such a vital role. Her care and steadiness helped keep our community safe and grounded. She was also a member of our community as a parent of immersion students, who are now in middle and high school. She will be relocating to another state.
Rachel Mauck: Rachel has only been with Edison one year as our instructional coach, but what an incredible impact she has had. She helped us fine tune our English Foundational skills teaching by training us in a research based program that the students love and she helped support the beginnig of our learning journey in Project Based Learning. Rachel will be working at McKinley full time and we will be welcoming our own full time instructional coach.
Deniz Oyman: Maestra Oyman has been a part of Edison since before many of us arrived. A pioneer in multi-age classrooms, she later became an outstanding special education teacher—bringing creativity, intelligence, and a strong commitment to social justice to her work. She’s also the proud parent of three immersion graduates, now young adults. Maestra Oyman will be retiring at the end of this school year.
Aileen Salmaggi: Maestra Salmaggi has worn many hats throughout her time at Edison. She has taught 1st through 4th grades, served as a Cotsen Fellow, our first Literacy Coach, and our English Learner Teacher on Special Assignment. Her work is infused with integrity and joy. Recently, she’s been transitioning into social-emotional learning work, sharing her expertise at conferences and through Family Constellations workshops at Edison. A former immersion parent herself, she will be retiring at the end of this year.
Sylvia Jimenez: Maestra Jimenez is one of the most well-known and beloved teachers in our community. She began at Edison as a Bilingual Instructional Assistant and soon became a classroom teacher, teaching 1st through 4th grades. She has served as a Cotsen Mentor and as a long-standing PTA staff representative. An artist and muralist, she donates her time to painting murals in low-income school libraries with Access Books—including the beloved book characters in our own school library. She is also the proud mother of an Immersion senior. Maestra Jimenez will be retiring at the end of this year.
Though they may be moving on, we know they’ll remain part of the Edison family—whether by helping out, visiting, or joining in the festivities of our Festival de Otoño. We are so excited for them and all that lies ahead.
¡Vamos Águilas… a volar! 🦅
5th Grade Promotion Ceremony
We will be celebrating our 5th graders at the promotion ceremony this Tuesday. All guests who will be sitting in a chair, must have a ticket and enter through the Kansas Avenue Gate. All students, including siblings who will attend the ceremony should arrive on time to school and go to class for attendance.
If you will be taking a sibling out of class to watch the ceremony, have them first go to class first for attendance, then when you are let in the Kansas gate, go to the front office with your promotion ticket and check them out of class. If you will be taking your children with you after the ceremony, make sure to let the front office know.
Here is the schedule:
8:45-9:15 Parents enter through the Kansas Ave Gate
9:15-10:45 Ceremony in the Cafeteria
11:00-12:00 Reception in La Placita
JACKETS AND WATER BOTTLES
We have a lot of lost jackets and water bottles. We will be putting them out in front of the school for parents to look through. Please pass by the front and pick up your child's lost items. Whatever is left will be donated at the end of the school year.
