Principal's Message
Dear CompSci Families,
We had a great Friday the 13th today, even though we had some students worrying about the date. This week we got moving on our curriculum, and the kids were ready to work. They were engaged in the lessons and completing assignments. Now we need to get them to share out more with one another, but it's early yet. Sixth grade is finally ready to follow their actual schedules, so that is a sure sign that things are moving along nicely.
Included in this newsletter is information about our PTO. Please take a look and if you are interested in hearing more about it, please use the QR code to fill out the google form. The form will remain open until the end of the month and then I will set up an initial meeting, most likely on zoom. We value family input into our school, so I hope you will willing to join. Please call me or email me with any questions.
Next week we have our two Curriculum Nights. Sixth grade is Tuesday, September 17 at 6:00 pm, and seventh and eighth grade is September 19 at 6:00 pm. Upon arrival we will direct you to your child's TAC room and you will have the chance to meet all of their teachers. I will be at the 6th grade night along with our Dean of Students, Ms. Ramos. The two Assistant Principals, Mr. LaFleur (7th grade) and Ms. Grant (8th grade) will attend on Thursday. We are looking forward to meeting you all!
Enjoy the weekend and the warm weather,
Jill Wnuk

8A TEAM UPDATES
SEPTEMBER 12th, 2024
U.S. HISTORY - MR. LIMEBURNER
Hello 8a families- this is Mr. Limeburner, the U.S. History teacher on our team! Every week, a different subject area will be letting you know what we’re up to here at CompSci, and today I am excited to introduce myself, and to talk briefly about our progress so far in my class.
I am from Old Saybrook down on the shoreline, and I currently live in West Granby (deep in the woods) with my wife Stephanie, and my children Mayzie (6) and Micah (2).This is my 10th year teaching at CREC, and my 8th year in this position in 8th grade. I hold degrees from the University of Hartford, and Southern Connecticut State University, and I love hiking, kayaking, mountain climbing… basically anything outdoors! I am deeply passionate about Social Studies, and am excited to help build a fire of interest in all my students for all of the topics we will be examining together this year.
So far in U.S. History, we have been examining the important dates that land right at the beginning of our school year. First, we examined the importance of Labor Day, and the long history of struggle that workers in America engaged in to achieve recognition and protection. Now, we are looking at the background to one of the darkest days in the history of our country, September 11th, 2001- and are examining how history played a central role in the events of that day. In both of these lessons, we have been working to introduce, practice, and strengthen key skills that will continue to serve each student moving forward in their academic paths, such as annotation, reading-for-meaning, and response formulation. Soon, we will be moving onto the earliest topics in our curriculum, which includes examination of Native American cultures.

CREC’s Statement of Diversity and Inclusion
“Capitol Region Education Council (CREC) is an intentionally diverse social justice organization whose members work to acknowledge, respect, and empathize with people of all different identifiers, such as race, socioeconomic status, gender identity and expression, education, age, ability, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, language, nationality, and religion. In accordance with CREC’s mission of equity, excellence, and success for all through high-quality educational services, our staff and students commit to participate in and support ongoing equity and inclusion programming through curricular and co-curricular offerings, professional learning, and local and national partnerships. Moreover, CREC staff and students strive to understand and confront the symptoms and causes of systematic oppression—ranging from implicit biases to micro aggressions to discriminatory policies, practices and traditions—that benefit privileged groups. While at CREC, staff and students commit to affirm and honor the lived experiences of others, to willingly challenge inherited beliefs and ideologies, and consequently learn, grow, and serve.”
