MESSAGE FROM THE ELKINS POINTE COUNSELOR
SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH LESSON AT ELKINS POINTE
Dear Parents and Guardians,
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. According to the CDC, suicide is among the leading causes of death for people ages 10-66, and is the second leading cause of death for young people ages 10-14.
Despite being a leading cause of death, suicide it is preventable. During this month, our school will be drawing attention to the problem of suicide and advocating the prevention of this tragedy. We will be sharing resources and activities throughout September to bring awareness to suicide prevention. Our counselors will be providing guidance lessons using the Signs of Suicide (SOS) Prevention Program. The SOS program has proven successful at increasing help-seeking by students who are concerned about themselves or a friend.
The goals of the SOS program are:
- To explain that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression.
- To provide students with training in how to identify serious depression and potential risk of suicide in a friend.
- To impress upon students that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of talking to a responsible adult about their concerns.
If you DO NOT wish for your child to participate in the SOS suicide prevention lesson, please complete the link by September 20, 2024: https://forms.office.com/r/djZJaLZbL3
Thank you,
Jody Glude

Their goal was to motivate students and faculty to demonstrate kindness as their patriotic duty. To show respect for the memories of our fallen American heroes, Elkins Pointe displayed the flag at half-staff.
