STUDENT COUNCIL EVENTS
STUFFED ANIMAL DRIVE
Thank you LCS families for your support of the stuffed animal drive for the Lake Country Firehouse. We collected a total of 1,072 stuffed animals!!!!!! Mrs. Jacobsen's fifth grade class collected the most donations with 242! They will be given a popsicle party. Lake Country Firehouse first responders will have a plethora of stuffed animals to hand out to affected children thanks to your generosity! Thank you!!!
PROJECT LINUS
Student Council has recently taken on a new community service project called Project Linus. Project Linus is an organization that takes homemade blankets and distributes them to local children in need. We are looking for donations of polar fleece that are 50” x 60” and must be new, smoke and pet free. Joann Fabrics and Hobby Lobby are great locations to get the fleece from. We also accept monetary donations which will be used to buy more materials, as well as fabric scissors. Checks should be addressed to “Lake Country School” with “Project Linus” in the memo. At this time, Student Council members will be the only ones working on the blankets. Contact Mrs. Thurin with any questions at thurinh@mylakecountryschool.org.

Strategies to Make Homework Go More Smoothly
Homework has been around as long as public schools have, and over the years considerable research has been conducted regarding the efficacy of homework practices. Besides contributing to academic success, homework can help teach children how to take responsibility for tasks and how to work independently. Homework helps children develop habits of mind that will serve them well as they proceed through school and through life. Specifically, homework helps children learn how to plan and organize tasks, manage time, make choices, and problem solve. All of these skills contribute to effective functioning in the adult world of work and families. Homework also helps parents stay involved with their child’s education.
We encourage parents to help and assist their children to follow a nightly homework routine. Below are some recommendations from the National Association of School Psychologists. If you have further questions please reach out to your child’s teacher. CLICK HERE FOR HELPFUL HOMEWORK ROUTINES
If you have further questions, concerns or need to collaborate about your child’s education or social/emotional/behavioral health; please reach out to your Student Support Team.

WELLNESS CORNER
The Lake Country School District promotes a healthy school environment for students and staff through education and awareness, and by providing and promoting healthy options and opportunities. The Lake Country School District will practice and promote good nutrition within the school setting. Students who practice good nutrition attend school with minds and bodies ready to take advantage of their learning environment. Eating habits are learned early in life. Therefore, the School Board, administrators and staff support a school environment that promotes and encourages lifelong nutritious eating habits.
More Healthy Lunchbox Ideas!
Written by Kaylee Sprau RD, LD, Registered Dietitian, Center for Healthy Weight and Nutrition
Does your child walk through the door after school and immediately claim they’re starving? Beginning the day with a healthy breakfast is key to starting the day out right. Equally as important is making sure your child has a healthy and balanced lunch to help keep them full and energized through the afternoon. As the new school year begins, parents find it can be challenging to pack exciting and nutrient packed lunches each day.
When it comes to any type of meal planning, we want to always keep the MyPlate picture in mind. Including at least 3-4 food groups (Fruits, Vegetables, Grains, Protein and Dairy) in a meal will make sure your child is getting adequate vitamins, protein, fiber and carbohydrates. The combination of these nutrients will provide lasting energy, fullness and the right vitamins and minerals for general health. A typical meal should be around 400-500 calories for growing children. Think outside the box when creating lunches, a sandwich does not always have to be included. Instead, make your own lunchable with whole grain crackers and cheese or a high protein granola bar paired with a yogurt and fruit. It’s also important to limit added sugars in foods to avoid “empty calories”. Common products with extra sugar include yogurt, granola bars, cereal and beverages. When choosing yogurts, aim for 12g or less per serving. Granola bars and cereals should have 6g or less per serving and beverages should ultimately be sugar free. Water and low-fat milk are the best drinks to offer at meals. Listed below are some healthy lunch combinations along with websites that provide more fun ideas.
Healthy School Lunch Ideas
- Homemade Lunchable: whole wheat crackers, reduced fat cheese cubes, turkey pepperoni, cucumbers and grapes
- Whole wheat tortilla filled with a lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, grilled chicken, drizzled with a yogurt-based ranch dressing paired with low-fat milk and an orange
- Yogurt Parfait: light yogurt, cup of mixed berries topped with low-fat granola along with bell peppers and a water
- Whole wheat crackers topped with tuna or chicken salad made with low-fat mayonnaise paired with cucumber slices, banana and a water
- Deli low-fat ham on whole wheat bread with sides of low-fat string cheese, apple, carrots and hummus and water
- Snack Pack: apple slices and celery sticks with peanut butter, high protein granola bar and low-fat milk
