A message from the Superintendent
Weekly Communication

May 22, 2024
We are thrilled to share some extraordinary news.
THERE IS A MOON LANDING SCHEDULED AT PVSD!
A MOON TREE LANDING!
Our school district has been chosen by NASA and the US Forest Service to receive an Artemis Moon Tree (learn more here). This unique sweet gum tree, which traveled on a 25-day mission around the moon into deep space before returning to Earth, symbolizes the spirit of exploration and discovery that we strive to instill in our students.
PVSD is among a very select group of governmental bodies, private industries, universities, and K-12 institutions across the nation to receive such an honor. This Moon Tree will be planted on the grounds of Middle School East, in a prominent location next to the trailhead kiosk at PV Woods- Lenape Arboretum, providing a lasting reminder of the possibilities that lie beyond our planet.
We invite the PV Community to join us for the Moon Tree Planting Ceremony on Saturday, June 1st, at 3:20 PM, immediately following our Food Truck Art Festival, 11:00am-3:00pm. This day promises to be a memorable occasion, celebrating both our community’s artistic talents and our commitment to scientific advancement.
Receiving this Moon Tree is not just a recognition of our district’s achievements but also a responsibility. We are required to report our progress quarterly to NASA and the US Forest Service. This aligns perfectly with our STEELS (Science, Technology, Engineering, Environment, Literacy, and Sustainability) standards and underscores our dedication to fostering the next generation of scientists and environmental stewards. In addition, we are excited to share that we are in discussions with The Pratt Institute to develop a partnership!
We hope you can join us for this momentous occasion. Your presence and support are invaluable as we embark on this exciting journey together.
Sincerely,
Barbara A. Russell, Ed.D.

School Police Officer (SPO) Update
Over the past several months, they have been undergoing extensive training to enhance the safety and security of our school community. Training topics include, but are not limited to: trauma informed concerns, mental health and social work review, weapons training and use of force, bullying recognition and prevention, and emergency response protocols and drills. The District is pleased to share that the SPOs will be completing their final training in the next few weeks.
As part of this transition, you will begin to see our SPOs in uniform on school grounds. We understand that this will be a noticeable shift from what you and your children have been accustomed to, and we want to assure you that our officers are here to support and protect our school community.
Additionally, our uniformed SPOs will be present at the upcoming commencement ceremonies. Their presence is intended to contribute to a safe and celebratory environment for all attendees.
We believe that the visibility of our uniformed officers will enhance the sense of safety and security within our schools. Our SPOs are dedicated to fostering a positive and secure learning environment.
