A message from the Principal and Assistant Principal
Dear Cactus Valley Families,
We hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving Break, and now the Winter Holiday season is upon us! CVE is excited to be doing the work that we are proud of, including focusing on planning to ensure your students are exposed to a variety of reading, writing, math, social studies, and science experiences. Teachers are also focused on using current data to ensure all students are learning and growing.
CVE Events & Activities
Our Thanksgiving Dinner was a huge success, and we appreciated seeing our families, staff, and students enjoying a delicious meal provided by our kitchen staff! Kudos to Monica and her staff for their hard work to ensure this annual event is continually a huge success! We also want to thank our volunteers who we could not do this event without.
We are hoping to see our families at the CVE Winter Festival on December 5th!
Our Fifth Grade Music Performance will be held at 6:00 on Wednesday, December 18th.
Holiday Classroom Parties will take place the afternoon of December 19th as well. Look for more information to come from your child’s teacher.
Reminders
Please support your child in dressing appropriately for the winter weather. On most days, our students will be outside to play which means hats, coats, snow pants, boots, mittens, etc. will be important for them to stay warm and dry! Be sure to label all clothing. If your child is missing items, please ask them to visit our lost and found. We have a lot of “lost” but very few “found.”
During inclement weather where it’s snowing/raining in such a way as to soak our kiddos, we’ll have ZONE 5 parents pick up their students in the front of the building. Cones will be removed to allow these cars to pull up to the top parking area. We’ll make every effort to ensure these parents are informed via text/auto dialer call from school to inform you of the change. However, sometimes the weather comes in quickly. If you don’t receive a call, and your child isn’t at the park for Zone 5, please come to CVE to pick them up.
In the event that inclement weather closes schools across the district, Garfield Re-2 will do its best to communicate the closure in a timely manner. In the event of a school closure, the following resources will be used to let families know about the closure:
First, an autodialer message will be sent to families as soon as possible. The practice is to make the call using the autodialer system by about 5:30 a.m.
Second, radio and television stations will be contacted. Radio stations will be contacted by Garfield Re-2 including KMTS (FM station on 99.1 and 99.5 on the FM dial) and The River (95.5 FM).
Television stations in both Grand Junction and Denver markets will be contacted to place the information in their school closure information. This includes KKCO, KJCT, KREX in Grand Junction and 9News, 7 News and CBS 4 in Denver.
Finally, the Garfield Re-2 website (www.garfieldre2.net), and social media feeds will be updated with this information.
Weather conditions may support an alternative to school closure or a "snow day schedule." This would result in a 2-hour delayed start to the school day to provide a greater margin of safety on days when snowstorms make early morning travel hazardous. All buses would run on a 2-hour delay to allow snow plows additional time to clear roads. All classes shall begin two hours late. The end of the day dismissal shall be at normal time.
The same communication methods will be used for a "snow day" or delayed start schedule.
Please be sure that your contact information is current by checking in with Kathy at the front office so that in the event of school closures, we are able to contact you.
We want to wish you all a safe, happy, healthy holiday season! Enjoy the upcoming break with your family as we welcome 2025 and a New Year!

Happy Holidays!!
As we wind down the second quarter we wish you a relaxing and fun holiday break.
Kindergarten is learning about empathy and perspective taking. This is to teach the skills of how to show care and concern for others. In 2nd grade the students are learning about how to handle mistakes and calming down your body so a small problem doesn’t turn into a big problem. 3rd grade is working on the skill of how to make friends. 4th grade is working on assertiveness skills and how to ask to join in a game or group activity. 5th grade is working on managing frustration, resisting revenge and how to handle put downs.
Totes for Hope, a program run through the River Center, gives families 6-7 non perishable food items weekly and is distributed on Wednesdays. If you are a family that could use the supplemental food, please contact me and I can get you signed up.
If you need hats, gloves, or winter boots, please reach out and I can help get these items for your student. If your family needs emotional support or other types of assistance, contact me, Amy Chabin, at 970-665-7764 or achabin@garfieldre2.net.

We took the month of November to learn about our first artist, Bob Ross. We studied the way he used his brushes on the canvas, accepted that there are no mistakes, only happy accidents and empowered us to have super positive attitudes! Our little artists attempted their very own Bob Ross nature painting. We learned different ways we can utilize our brushes and even popsicle sticks as makeshift palette knives.
Our third graders were asked by Alpine bank to help create their holiday card. They asked all the third graders from Glenwood Springs to Parachute and our Peter Curt, from Mrs. Foreback's class, was chosen to be the winner for the New Castle/Silt schools.
