ACT Now Presentations for K-8
Hillsborough County Public Schools recognizes that educating children involves promoting their mental wellness as well as their academic achievement. To encourage positive mental health, all grade levels will be participating in ACT Now! class sessions with Student Services personnel (school counselors, school psychologists, and school social workers). The focus of these sessions is to define mental health, recognize concerning behaviors, learn healthy coping skills, identify trusted adults, and receive information regarding local and national resources. “ACT” in ACT Now! stands for:
A = Acknowledge signs that the student or a peer may need mental health support
C = Demonstrate Care in interactions
T = Tell a trusted adult (school personnel, parents, and others)
Presentation Topics by Grade Level
Students in grades K-3: school safety and trusted adults
Students in grades 4-5: mental health, school safety, and trusted adults
Students in grades 6-12: mental health, suicide prevention and school safety
If you do not want your child to participate in an ACT Now! session, please complete this form and return it to your child’s teacher by Sept. 27, 2024, as presentations will take place on October 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

Millage Referendum
Our students deserve the best educational experience possible. To achieve this and strengthen our foundation, we need additional funding to retain and recruit high-quality educators and support our schools. A millage referendum for HCPS schools will be on the ballot this November. Admirals in Action
Mrs. Luchies and Mrs.Innocenti's 4th grade class became "Super Sleuths" last Friday! They used their knowledge of place value and their collaboration skills to capture the infamous "Petrifying Place Value Gang."
Mrs. Lamaida's and Mrs. Gratt's kindergarten classes got an introduction to the STEM lab last week! Students set goals for what they’d like to accomplish in the lab from Minecraft coding to Lego builds to experiments!
Mrs. Kudia’s 4th grade class is doing student run book clubs for homework. They worked on goal setting (self-management skills) and communicating how knowledgeable they are about the books they are reading all week to their peers in their Monday book chats. Students decided on groups, book titles, discussion questions and the number of pages they will read each week for homework.
Mrs. Oakes and Mrs. Mayhall's 5th grade classes participated in a mystery book swap! Students wrapped and described books for each other to choose. What a fun way to encourage reading, communicate story elements, and connect with one another!
Mrs. Cooper's 8th grade ELA students are reflecting on their own writing to find areas for growth!
Ms. Dihel’s Reading class played a card game to correctly place nouns into categories. It was fun to combine the social skills of game play with academics!
8th Grade Robotics Olympic Venue Project "Opening Ceremonies:" We had songs, robots, drones, presentations, and even soccer!
In Science this week Mrs. Varnadoe's 2nd grade class continued to be inquirers about weather systems and wind by creating a wind maze and attempting to move an object by using only the force of wind.
Today, Ms. Malden and Mrs. Snell's students, transitioned from scientists to engineers, learning about the Engineering Design Loop. Working in pairs, they designed prototypes to safely get JoJo out of a tree. I'm pleased to share that all teams successfully completed the task and ensured JoJo's safe descent.
Mrs. Schoenbachs class practiced being engineers! They were knowledgeable picking out their materials and building with them, and had to reflect on what didn’t work to make them better. They were also communicators while working with their buddies!
Students in Ms. Casey’s math classes modeled ratio relationships using Fruit Loop- a creative way to get those thinking skills activated!
Using the project “Lego Boat Trip” Crouch/Smart 3rd graders collected measurement data as evidence to support their claim that the speed of the motor affected the distance the boat travelled.
Mrs. Washington's students encouraged each other and demonstrated good communication skills as they worked together solving a math problem in class.
York students wore patriotic clothing in honor of Patriot's Day on 9/11. Many classes participated in read-alouds and activities to learn about America's first responders/helpers, with our upper grades reflecting on the sacrifice, as well as the resilience, of so many through the stories of the heroes on that day.
Our PYP artists continued their exploration of different art centers this week, we are so impressed with what they are creating and how they are embodying our IB Learner Profiles. They are inquirers, thinkers, and risk-takers! VPK was especially adorable this week as they created some amazing Dot Art!
It was a fun day as 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders practiced their throwing and catching skills with the Jr. Bucs! They also worked on their locomotor skills (jumping, hopping, running, etc.) as they carried a ball. We are proud of our "Risk Takers" for trying something new and for being respectful to their staff.

Reminders for a Safe Arrival & Dismissal
Arrivals:
PYP (Primary Years Program) students arriving between 7:40-7:55am should report to the cafeteria to allow for teacher contracted planning time. The Student Services Team will be supervising students as they eat and assisting them as they move into classrooms. Arrivals after 7:55am can go to the cafeteria for breakfast OR go directly to class. MYP students can get breakfast from the carts located in the courtyard and will remain there until the 8:00am bell rings to enter the building.
Students are only to be dropped off in the lane closest to York's office sidewalk. For our students' safety, PLEASE DO NOT ALLOW STUDENTS TO EXIT CAR FROM THE 2nd LANE or from parking spots in front of the school as those locations require them to cross moving traffic in lane 1.
Dismissal:
It is important for cars to stay in their designated lane and not switch as it disrupts the dismissal process. Students are called to designated cones based on the order of names taken. Please be sure to enter our line by 3:15pm while our staff is still out taking names. If you arrive after 3:15pm, please be prepared to park and proceed to the office with your driver's license.
