Important College Planning Information for Juniors Vol. 2
I Don't Know Where to Start with College Planning!
This is something we hear a lot and it is completely okay! We are here to help you.
I don't know which college I want to attend.
- Check out the Explore tab in Xello (located in your AISD portal - click on Clever, then Xello).
- Check out the Big Future website created by College Board.
- Big Future allows you to compare colleges side by side.
- You can also search for colleges based on major, location, cost etc.
What should I be doing right now to prepare for college applications?
- Most college applications open August 1st. You will typically use one of these websites to apply or will use the college's specific application (check each college's website to see what application(s) they utilize):
- 1. Apply Texas- All Public Texas Colleges will be located on this website.
- 2. Common App- Many Out of State Colleges and some Texas Colleges use this application.
- It is recommended students create a list of 5-8 schools they intend to apply. Make a copy of this spreadsheet to keep organized.
- Be sure to have a balanced list which includes reach schools, target schools and safety schools.
- Make note of the college application deadlines and materials needed for each application (letters of recommendation, transcript, essay, etc.)
- Begin preparing essays for admission and scholarship applications. Here are the Common App essay prompts for 24/25. Write your draft outside of the application and copy/paste it to the application after August 1st.
- Register for the SAT and/or the ACT, if needed.
- Create a professional, personal email address if you do not already have one. Do not use your AISD email for applications!
- Meet with your College and Career Advisor if you have any questions! Advisors are available by appointment. Please schedule during your privilage period. Walk-ins are also welcome.
The AHS College and Career Center's website will be a great resource for you during your college, career and military planning. There is information regarding college representative visits, transcript requests, college application terminology, resume building, college essay writing tips, and more!
In addition, we are offering a variety of virtual boot camps this summer. Please see below.
