MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Greetings MVCSD Community,
As we continue showcasing the academic achievements at STEAM Academy, our scholars were provided with exciting activities during STEM Day. This was a day full of math, computer science and engineering. Pace University brought a robot named Pepper, which introduced itself to the crowd before interacting with the students. We are delighted to have partnerships such as this one to provide students with the opportunity to engage in insightful instructional experiences and education. Thank you, Pace University, Westchester County Legislator Jewel Williams Johnson and all of our attendees for participating and inspiring our students.
We visited Albany this week for the Conference of Big 5 School Districts. The presentations and information shared will be very valuable in supporting our scholars and their education. We are always excited to work together with other school districts and the New York State Education Department to gather important information and learn about initiatives that can enhance the quality of our programs.
Mount Vernon High School teacher Cesar Olivares and his History of the Americas class had a dramatic lesson on Monday morning, where they acted out historical events. In the class’s second rendition of these visual lessons, they continued to learn about the trials of Andrew Jackson as part of their International Baccalaureate (IB) courses. These lessons provide students with engaging ways to get excited about their education while building connections with their teachers and peers.
Graham School held its inaugural Math with Mom’s event on Wednesday morning, with over 70 mother figures and role models attending to support. Not only did they learn best practices to navigate equations, but they also learned about self-care practices. Participants worked with one another and their children to solve math equations. I hope that events such as this one inspire parents and guardians to get more involved in their children’s education, while also noting the importance of taking care of themselves.
In the Our Students, Now alumni spotlight series, we are highlighting Stacia Fogg, a pre-K teacher at Edward Williams School. Our youngest scholars will be with us for many more years, and it is important that they have a positive teacher to start that journey. Ms. Fogg provides that.
Kindest Regards,
Dr. K. Veronica Smith
Acting Superintendent of Schools
