Las Positas Family Updates
February 2025
Dear Las Positas Families,
I am not sure how we got to February already, but here we are! We’re kicking off the month with Parent/Teacher Conferences during the first week of February. These meetings are scheduled for students with academic or behavioral needs, so not all students will require a conference. If your child’s teacher requests a meeting, they will reach out to schedule a time. Thank you for your continued support!
The Kids Heart Challenge will begin on February 12th! Stay tuned for more information in a separate email about how you can make a difference!
Mark your calendars! Our PTA-sponsored Friendship Dance is happening on February 7th, and it’s an event you won’t want to miss! Join us for a fun-filled evening of music, dancing, and community. Drinks will be available for purchase, and please remember that all students must attend with an adult. We look forward to seeing you there!
We’re thrilled to announce that theater classes are now part of our Visual and Performing Arts Program! Ms. Bowie kicked off a 6-session series last week, giving students a wonderful opportunity to explore creativity, expression, and performance. We can’t wait to see their talents shine!
We kindly ask for your support in monitoring the shows your children are watching at home. Recently, we have noticed students across all grade levels—even as young as TK—reenacting scenes from Squid Game during recess. This show contains violent themes that are not appropriate for young children and certainly not suitable for school. Please help us reinforce safe and appropriate play by ensuring your child is engaging with age-appropriate content. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our school a safe and positive environment for all students.
Warmest regards,
Jackie Jenkins
Principal

Welcome our NEW Office Manager, Rebecca Serna!
We are excited to introduce Rebecca Serna as our new Office Manager! She joined our team in mid-January and worked alongside Maria for a smooth transition. We encourage you to stop by the office to say hello and welcome her to our school community!
A heartfelt THANK YOU to Maria Aguilera for being such a valued member of the Las Positas community. While we will miss her greatly, we wish her all the best as she begins her new journey at Imperial Middle School. We know she will be a familiar face as our Lion alumni begin their journey in middle school. Best of luck, Maria—you will always be part of the Las Positas family!
A Message from Mr. Do, School Counselor
Hello Las Positas Parents!
If you and your family are interested in running in a race, we have two races that we will participate in: Kids Run the OC (KROC) (May 3, 2025) and the La Habra 5K (March 8, 2025). Here is the link to register for KROC: https://runsignup.com/Race/Register/?raceId=135935. Here is the link to register for the La Habra 5K: https://register.chronotrack.com/r/84224. See below for the flyers.
On February 14, join us at school for Donuts with Do! Our topic for this month is self-care. Donuts and Refreshments will be served! Small children are ALWAYS welcome.
Lunar New Year begins on January 29, 2025, marking the Year of the Snake! To celebrate, we had fun activities in Lunch Bunch, where students learned about Lunar New Year traditions, played trivia, and received red envelopes. This holiday is a wonderful time to reflect on new beginnings, kindness, and cultural traditions. To all who celebrate, we wish you happiness, good health, and prosperity in the year ahead!
National School Counseling Week (February 3-7, 2025) is a time to recognize the role of school counselors in supporting students' academic, social, and emotional growth. As your school counselor, I am committed to helping our students succeed and thrive. Thank you for your partnership in fostering their well-being.
Upcoming Learner Profile of the Month by Ms. Riggs, IB Coordinator
The February Learner Profile Attribute is Thinker
A Thinker is a student who uses critical and creative thinking to analyze problems and make reasoned decisions. This student is open-minded, empathetic, and enjoys engaging in discussions. They are resilient in the face of challenges and change.
How can parents help to develop students who are thinkers at home?
Encourage your child to engage in unstructured play, especially outside.
Pause and wait...give your child time to think for him/herself, be patient.
Don't intervene immediately, it's okay to let your child figure it out on their own.
Ask open-ended questions (not questions that can be answered with yes/no!)
Help children develop problem solving skills (don’t always have an answer or solution for them).
Let your child experience failure, and then let him/her figure out how to turn their failure into a positive learning experience.
Listen when your child expresses and opinion, and ask them to explain their thinking.
