Evening Street Weekly Update
November 8, 2024
We Are A Grateful Nation
This week we honored veterans of the Evening Street community. Parents of Maggie Corcoran, Shawn and Lisa, were our guest speakers. Shawn is a West Point graduate; Lisa is a Notre Dame graduate. The couple shared their stories of how they came to serve our country. The audience was captivated by their journey. Our third grade students' performance was perfect. You can hear a bit of the concert by clicking the Veterans' Day Assembly.
Ashlee Wetta, mom to Owen and Chloe, has offered to organize our squares from the Eagle Family meeting. She too was impressed by the drawings the children created. However, some of the drawings go close to the edge of the squares. She has a great idea of using iron-on interfacing to stick the squares on fabric backing. However, we need donations of sewing scraps of at least 7 x7" or 8 x 8" square for the backing. She will then quilt those together by zigzagging around borders to prevent fraying. The end product will be a wall hanging. If you have any material scraps, at least 7x7" or 8x8", ideally woven cotton or knit cotton, please consider donating to the quilt project. All donations can be sent to the office.
The children are gearing up for our second Thanksgiving Parade. Here is the challenge:
Using your class’ recess wagon as the base, design a “float” that meets the following criteria:
It follows a theme of your class’ choice
It includes every student in some phase: planning, design, and/or presentation of the float
It includes the Cardboard Design Challenge of at least 50% of float from cardboard
It entertains the audience (think music, costumes, audience participation, etc.)
We will host a Thanksgiving Parade on Tuesday, November 26th at 1:15 p.m. outside on the playground. Feel free to come be a spectator at our parade. Last year was so much fun!

Update on Technology Practices
As technology continues to become more present in our student’s lives, Worthington Schools has been seeking to better understand the impacts of technology in our classrooms. All schools in Ohio are required to adopt a policy regarding cell phone use by July 2025. Superintendent Dr. Bowers recently presented student, community, and staff feedback regarding cell phone use in our schools and Worthington’s progress toward defining a cell phone policy which you can view here.
Based on this feedback, we are adjusting our technology practices at the elementary level. Students at our elementary schools have always been asked to silence cell phones and are required to keep them in their bookbags during the school day. Now, this practice will also apply to smartwatches and other wearable technology.
This change supports a more focused and distraction-free classroom environment while still allowing students to access technology for communication to and from school. We understand that many families find value in features like location tracking, and this adjustment allows for these needs to be met without interrupting the school day. Thank you for your continued support as we work together to create the best learning experience for all our students!
Should you have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
