Principals Message:
Kia ora whaanau,
Last week the Year 9’s went on a trip to visit the sites from the Waikato land wars. They had an amazing time learning about the history of the sites. This trip was for the end of their unit of work on the New Zealand land wars in their integrated studies class.
Congratulations to Cruz Kikkert, who raised $2155.60 for cancer with his shave for a cure campaign. We presented Cruz with his certificate at the assembly this week. We are very proud of Cruz and for his efforts and for showing our school values.
On Wednesday we held the River Zone Soccer tournament for Years 3-6. Luckily, the sun came out, and although it was a cold morning, the day was fine. It was great to see our students cheering each other on and displaying our school values. Well done to everyone involved and to the team of staff members who put it all together.
Reports will be sent home next Monday for Years 7-13 and will be on Seesaw for Years 1-6. If you have any questions about your child’s report, please feel free to contact the subject or classroom teacher for extra information. Please note this is a change of date.
This Friday is also our Matariki celebration at Te Kotahitanga Marae. It starts at 6pm. Students presenting or receiving awards need to come in full uniform. Everyone is welcome to join us in celebrating our student’s successes and finish the evening by eating kai together.
You will have noticed over this year we are publishing photos of events in the school newsletter. We check photo permissions for all students that are identifiable in the photos. If a student does not have permission a smiley face image will be placed over the student’s face, so that we can continue to use group photos. If you wish to know whether your child has permission or not, or if you would like to change the permission, please contact the office.
A big thank you to Gallagher for sponsoring the gate for our horticulture area. Our students are grateful for the support of you have shown them. (photo below)

Year 9 Land Wars Unit Trip
In Integrated Studies this term, we have been focusing on the New Zealand Land Wars. We started the unit off by looking at all the battles that make up the NZ Wars. The students put together a presentation and created a model of their battle site. The creativity of our students is outstanding!
To finish off the unit, we put together an overnight trip, taking all the Year 9 students to see the sites of the Waikato Invasion. We started at Pokeno, and made our way down to Rangiriri on the first day. With stops at Mercer, Whangamarino and Meremere in between. We were lucky enough to be able to stay at Horahora Marae in Rangiriri for the night. For some of our students this was their first experience of staying on a Marae, and by all accounts they enjoyed it!
The second day saw us up at dawn, ready to see some more battle sites. First stop was Ngaruawahia. It was a quick stop, as it was very foggy and cold!! Then it was back on the bus and down to Te Awamutu. Here we visited the Museum for a korero about the sites and battles that happened in the area. The museum guides then showed us to the sites at Rangiaowhia and Orakau. We all learnt allot of challenging history at these stops. Then after a quick refuel at McDonalds, we were off to our last stop at Pirongia. Here we met with Matua’s lecturer from University Matua Kereti. The stories he was able to tell us were out of this world!
The students also really enjoyed the Alexandra Redoubt as it was the most intact and allowed for lots of role play. Overall, it was a great trip!
Year 10 Market Day - Tuesday 6th July
The Year 10 students are hosting a market day next week where they will be selling a range of products and services at Break 1. This is part of a unit of learning where the students have developed a business plan based on a product idea their group has developed to sell to at the market day.
Most products are between 50c and $3, so we encourage students to bring along some coins and support the students with their business enterprise. Stalls will be at different locations around the school, but mainly on the junior courts.
We will be letting the students of Year 1-3 out of class 20 minutes early so that they can buy some products without having to queue with older students.
Here is the list of businesses and products that will be available on the day:
OAS Speech Competition Winners
Year 7/8 - Faith Gilchrist - "Why It Is Good To Have Flatulence"
Year 9 - Jessica Downs - "This Is Me"

Onewhero Daycare
Hi, for a number of months we have been working towards re-opening the Onewhero daycare. We’ve renovated the building including putting in a Commercial Kitchen so we can provide meals. We’ve been through a Resource Consent process with Council so that we can offer places to under two year-olds which weren’t previously available. We’re also extending the operating hours to full-day care to cater to working parents. We’re working really hard to make this a high quality centre.
We’re now starting to hire staff to help us on that journey. You can find the job advert to apply online either by searching on keyword ‘Dandelions’ at www.seek.co.nz or you can find the job advert link on our Facebook page DandelionsAndDragonfliesOnewhero and follow us there for future updates.
