Classroom Updates
Earth Science with Ms. Ballantine
Hi Scientists!
Over the past week, students reviewed material in preparation for their summative assessment on plate motion, which they completed on Friday. Next week, we have our field trip to the National Museum of African American History on Friday. Before that, students will dive into a new unit on rock transformation and the rock cycle! They’ll start things off with a reading and a unit pre-test. Additionally, students will be introduced to their Term 2 root words and will take Roots Quiz 2.1. The words are listed below:
Roots Quiz 2.1:
*centi = 1/100, 0.01 (Think: centimeter or centipede)
*milli = 1/1000, 0.001 (Think: millimeter or millisecond)
hexa = 6 (Think: hexagon)
*octa = 8 (Think: octogon)
deca = 10 (Think: decade or decagon)
Math with Mr. Brown & Mr. Gawthrop
Math 6
This week students worked on calculating unit rate, percent (and related values), and discount using the proportional method. Though a short week, this week students will demonstrate mastery of current concepts by taking a RCT Assessment and begin work in Unit 4. Included in our virtual classroom will be a link to a portion of Illustrative Mathematics website curriculum dedicated to allowing parents to give support of current topics from home. Students needing extra time/technical assistance are to see me during iRecess for help.
Math 7
This week students made connections between the graphs, tables, and equations of a proportional relationships and took an assessment on the concepts. Though a short week, this week students will explore mathematical relationships within circles (Unit 3). Included in our virtual classroom will be a link to a portion of Illustrative Mathematics dedicated to allowing parents to give support of current topics from home. Students needing extra time/technical assistance are to see me during iRecess for help.
Though no school for students on Monday/Tuesday, students are still expected to complete homework assigned during regular schedule (Monday ..due Wednesday/ Wednesday ...due Friday + Weekly iReady passed)
Language Arts with Ms. Byrns & Mr. Gawthrop
This week students took ANET, worked on using dialogue purposefully (to develop plot, characterization or give background).
Next week, we will focus on the events of Chapters 8-10 in Roll of Thunder and look at several instances of retribution that arise in these pages. This long weekend would be a great time for students who may not be caught up to get some reading done!
We will head to the African American History Museum on Friday. Rather than explore the entire museum, we will focus on the third and fourth floors. At the museum, students will use graphic organizers to find examples of courage through the lens of the African American experience. These graphic organizers will count as a formative grade. The following week students will turn their work into a digital poster highlighting two of the artifacts and describing how they connect to a theme of courage. This work will be a summative grade.
Finally, we will begin reading Tuck Everlasting on December 7. This is a much shorter book and we plan to read it entirely in December! Please send in a copy for your child as soon as possible. Many thanks.

Geography with Ms. Trenkle
This week in Geography we began our study of the African Diaspora, first by defining diaspora, and then by studying case studies. Students are taking notes in a graphic organizer to help them think about and understand how different people represent the diaspora.
Next week we have a short week. Students will have more case studies on Wednesday and Thursday and our field trip on Friday! :)
A reminder that CEAs are assigned in class on Monday (but often posted on Sunday before) and due at the end of the week. I will take them the following Monday for 80% credit, but they are not accepted after that. A new CEA will have been assigned. Students must turn in all CEAs in class—I do no look for CEAs in my email. Students receive a template each week and it is also posted in Canvas. If students get home and are unable to print the template and don’t have one, they can always write it out on lined notebook paper. All CEAs connect to the region we are studying. I have been very impressed with students’ connections in class to our content and the CEA! Keep bringing the excellent work!
Thank you for the awesome postcards! We are continuing to read them and post them on our map! So fun and impressive! Thank you for sharing and bringing the world to us!
