Google Drive Migration
Storing and Accessing Your Files Anywhere
Background Information
Start With Why
- Files are backed up
- Free up server space/improve computer speed
- Ability to use files on other computers and devices
- Easier to share files between colleagues
What Stays the Same
- You can still use the same software programs you use now: Microsoft Word/Excel/Powerpoint, Smart Notebook, etc.
- You can still use Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides
- You can create folders in Google Drive
- You can share files and folders with staff and students
What Is Changing
- We will no longer save files in our server folders
- You can access your Google Drive files from your internet browser OR directly on your computer desktop
- You can share non-Google files (Smart notebook, Powerpoint, etc.) with colleagues easily
- You will not need to download non-Google files to be able to use them if they are stored in your Drive
- You will have the Google Drive app icon in your top menu bar and you will see it in your folder list
If Google Drive Is Not Installed
To Install a Google Drive Folder in the Dock
Not required, just a handy shortcut for Mac users!
Add Google Drive Folder to Dock
Automatic Conversion
- This is a personal choice for each person.
- The default for Google is to try to convert all files to Google.
- If you prefer to keep the original file type (Word, Smart Notebook, etc.), you will want to turn that off so it will ask you before converting.

How To Save Files From Now On
- Do not save your files anywhere but Google Drive
- You can organize the files into folders just like on your regular computer desktop (see below)
- Any files saved on your desktop or server folder will not be backed up or saved after the 2015-2016 school year.
