Weekly News at Reidy Creek Elementary School 2/21/2025
Dear Reidy Creek Families,
I hope you enjoyed the long weekend and had a chance to get some rest and relaxation! Next Friday marks the end of trimester two. Teachers will be working on compiling recent assessment results in order to complete report cards. All report cards will be sent home with students on Friday, March 7th.
This week, our fifth graders had the opportunity to attend a unique field trip called Biztown through Junior Achievement. Over the last several weeks, classroom teachers provided lessons and hands-on activities in business, economics, and free enterprise. On Wednesday, students visited The McGrath Family JA BizTown, which is a 10,000-square-foot mini-city comprised of 21 life-sized San Diego businesses where students connected the lessons they learned in the classroom to ‘real-world’ applications. They ran a business, earned paychecks, opened bank accounts, paid taxes, voted, and were challenged to earn a profit in their business. This is the first year our school has participated in this field trip, and it was a truly memorable experience. Below are a few pictures from the day.
As we head into the third trimester, I also want to share a bit about our new Social Emotional Curriculum, Second Step, that we implemented this year. Second Step is a research-based social-emotional learning (SEL) curriculum designed to help students develop essential life skills such as empathy, emotional regulation, problem-solving, and responsible decision-making. Through engaging lessons, interactive activities, and real-life scenarios, Second Step equips students with the tools to navigate social interactions, manage their emotions, and build positive relationships. The program fosters a supportive classroom environment, promoting a culture of kindness, respect, and resilience that benefits students and the school community. Although our teachers do a wonderful job of addressing our students' social/emotional needs that arise throughout the day, they have also taught explicit lessons each week as part of this curriculum. At this point in the year, they've taught about growth mindset, goal-setting, bullying prevention, and emotional management. Over the next few months, lessons will cover empathy, kindness, and problem-solving.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Megan Loh

Absences and Tardies
This year, our school has been focusing on the importance of attendance. Students who are not at school miss valuable instruction toward grade-level standards. While we have maintained a 95% or above average for the majority of the year, we have seen a significant drop in the last few weeks. During both January and February, our ADA is under 93%. While I understand many students have been ill, students are able to return back to school as long as their symptoms are improving and they have been fever-free for 24 hours.
I also want to emphasize the importance of arriving to school on time. Our school day starts promptly at 8:10 am. Our school expects students to be on campus and lined up waiting for their teachers at 8:10 am. We close the gates at 8:10 am, and any students arriving after that time will need to go to the office for a tardy slip. When this happens, students often miss the beginning of a lesson or important instructions for the day.
If your child or family needs any support with attendance, please don't hesitate to reach out. Our school has many resources that can assist.
Yearbook Purchase
Yearbooks are still available for purchase! On Monday and Tuesday, both before and afterschool, a member of our PTA will be outside for any families who would like to purchase a yearbook.
Families can still purchase online by using this yearbook ordering link.
The deadline to order a yearbook is March 21st. After this date, parents will only be able to pay by check or cash. If you have any questions regarding the yearbook, or have photos to add, please email rcyearbookphotos@yahoo.com.
State Testing
For third-fifth grade students, an important part of a student's academic program is measuring his/her progress through the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) assessments. The CAASPP assessments (SBAC) are administered in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics and will demonstrate how well our students have mastered the standards at their grade level.
Because CAASPP tests are given statewide, they provide an opportunity to measure the skills of all students against the same academic standards. Given online, the tests are computer-adaptive, allowing a more precise measurement of individual skills. Parents can use their student’s ELA or mathematics results as one of many indicators of their child’s performance. Our staff uses these results to inform our grade level instruction and also to compare our school's performance toward achieving our state standards.
I will provide more information regarding these tests and schedules in the future, but I wanted to give you the dates for testing so you can avoid planning appointments and/or trips during this time. Testing is scheduled for Monday, May 5th through Friday, May 23rd. Thank you in advance for helping ensure all students attend school during this time.
All K-5th grade students will also be taking the Spring iReady Diagnostic test in May. This test provides excellent data on how students have grown towards grade level standards this year. More information regarding dates for this test will be sent out in the coming months.
Lunch and Learn Dates
Our next Lunch and Learn is for fifth grade families around digital safety. This is a very important topic and will cover information about how to empower children to report unsafe online behaviors, engage children to take an active role in solving problems safely, and encourage conversations about online safety between students and families. Our fourth and fifth grade students will attend a digital safety assembly at the end of February, and this presentation compliments it perfectly. The presentation will be in the MPR from 11:10-11:40. Following the presentation, parents can join their children for lunch in our courtyard.
Lunch and Learn Dates and Topics:
2/25/25 - Fifth Grade - Digital Safety
3/5/25 - Third Grade - CAASPP Testing
4/23/25 - Second Grade - Navigating friendships through SEL
5/21/25 - Fourth Grade - Digital Safety
The parent presentations will all be in the MPR 30 minutes before your child's scheduled lunch time. After the presentation, families will be invited to enjoy lunch in the courtyard with their child. Grade level flyers will be sent home closer to each event.
