Message from Mrs. King, Southwest Academy PTSA President, with a few announcements about upcoming events.
Greetings Southwest Academy Family!
First, Spelling Bee 2025 will be held on Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at 6:30pm. Interested students should fill out a permission slip (attached) and return it to the Main Office or send an email to swaptsa@outlook.com. There will be an informational meeting next week where the students will receive study words and get guidance on Spelling Bee rules. This is a fun event and so we hope to have a lot of student participants. The winner goes on to the regional bee at Camden Yards. Please call me at 443.799.5708 if you have any questions.
The PTSA will welcome families at Pat’s Pizza (1111 Ingleside Avenue, 21207) for a holiday social from 6-7pm on Wednesday, December 11. This is an opportunity for families to socialize with one another in a less formalized setting as we head off to Winter Break. We hope to see you there.
***Attendees are responsible for the purchase of their own refreshments.
The trip to Dave & Buster’s for fundraiser winners (sold 7 boxes) is scheduled for Monday, December 16 (3:45-6:30pm). Permission slips are required, and are being emailed to parents this weekend. Hard copies will be distributed on Monday, December 9. If your student is eligible for the trip but does not receive a hard copy, please call. Forms must be returned no later than Friday, December 13 via email (swaptsa@outlook.com) or to the Main Office. Please call if you have any questions.
Finally, we want to thank all of the dads/men (and moms) who came out to Doughnuts with Dudes on November 21. It was great to see so many people there! We hope that you all had a great time.
*CALLING ALL MEN, SWA NEEDS YOU! Please come out to Coffee and Conversations on Thursday, December 12 (7:30-8:30am) to talk about topics important to the men of the Southwest Academy Community- hosted by Mr. Gee ( 7th Grade AP). (Flier attached.)
We also want to thank everyone who attended the Scholastic Book Fair (November 20-22). This is the first time Southwest Academy has hosted the fair in many years. We hope that everyone enjoyed themselves and we look forward to hosting another one in 2025!
That is all for now. Until next time, take care.

Wise Word of the Week
Last Week Word - INTERPRET- This week's word - CONTRAST
For the 2024-2025 school year, there will be an intense focus on cross-curricular vocabulary instruction. In core content classes and on the morning announcements, students will be introduced to a word and given the opportunity to make connections with the word within their content, with the expectation of greater comprehension as well as increased MAP reading scores.
Help us reinforce this focus by asking your student what word is for the week and having them use the word at home. Practice doesn't make perfect. Practice makes progress.🙂
