Booster Fundraiser
A heartfelt thank you for your incredible efforts and generosity during our fall fundraiser! We set a goal of $30,000, and thanks to all of you, we surpassed it by reaching over $52,000 in estimated profits for our school!
Donations came in from 30 states, with 95 corporate donors joining the cause. Special thanks to our Bulldogs' Grandparents, who were the top donating group, contributing an impressive 35% of the total donations.
All students received a fun Dude Perfect keychain and had a blast at the culminating obstacle course event. We wrapped up the week with an exciting awards ceremony and dunk tank, where 21 students got the chance to dunk a McKinley staff member!
Thank you once again for your amazing support and commitment to our school. Together, we’re making a difference!

A Message from Mrs. Ness-Manary
Our Bulldogs will be learning all about Responsibility this month! The definition we use for Responsibility is to take action and understand how our choices affect others, ourselves and the world. Within each classroom, teachers and students will be using activities, songs and games to learn more about what Responsibility means.
On Wednesday, October 16th McKinley will be celebrating Unity Day! On this day, we ask that students WEAR AND SHARE ORANGE to unite for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion to send a visible message that no child should ever experience bullying. We can’t wait to hear how our Bulldogs show kindness and acceptance that day and throughout the school year!
Mark your calendars! McKinley is hosting two opportunities to help raise funds for Thanksgiving meals for McKinley families in November!
Students can bring $1 to wear a hat on two special days to celebrate Hats Off to Giving!
Friday, November 8
Friday, November 15
ALL money raised will go directly to McKinley families to help with Thanksgiving groceries.
If you are in need of assistance or would like to help sponsor a family for Thanksgiving and/or our winter holiday program, Making Spirits Bright, please reach out to Mrs. Ness-Manary, 763-506-3479, jessica.nessmanary@ahschools.us
The Artful Bulldogs - Mrs. Thomsen
The McKinley Art Room is filled with the most wonderful artists. We are excited for all the
beautiful art we will amaze you with this year!
Kindergarten
Our kindergarten artists have been learning about lines. A line is a dot that goes on a walk. We learned about the artist Faith Ringgold and how she incorporated lines into her beautiful quiltart. Our artists are making line & pattern quilts for their teddy bears. We will be doing a lot of practicing with scissors, too. I love to see all of their enthusiasm for art! Ask them to draw you some lines.
First Grade
Our first grade artists are focusing on lines and shapes this trimester. I introduced artist Piet Mondrian who loved to use lines in his pieces. We are making some beautiful pieces of abstract art made from horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines. We also reviewed and used primary colors. Have them tell you about Mr. Mondrian.
Second Grade
This trimester's focus is on introducing the Element of Art, texture. We are learning about implied and real texture. Our artists are working on a piece of art that combines different types of implied texture to a fall scene. Ask them to show you implied and real textures in your home.
Third Grade
This trimester, our third grade artists are mastering all of the elements of art. Our first project is incorporating all the elements into their name. We learned how to make block letters and applied each element inside their letters. They are doing an amazing job. Ask your artist to name some elements of art.
Fourth Grade
Our focus this trimester in fourth grade is to learn how art communicates. Students learn how to read and create art that can speak a narrative without using words. We started our personal pocket project that gives information about the artist using drawings to depict things they love. Ask your artist what’s in their personal pockets.
Fifth Grade
During the span of this year, students will be exploring how artists see and create art differently by examining work in four (or more) art styles. We started with Realism and learned about the artist Wayne Thiebaud. He is known for his delicious paintings of cakes, donuts and other types of food. We are currently creating a beautiful bakery of donuts in our art room. Ask your artist what kinds of donuts they are making.
Explorations News - Mrs. Marano
Kindergarten
In Explorations, kindergarten students have been learning about what plants need to grow. We are just about to do a plant experiment to give evidence for our claims that plants need water and sun to be healthy plants. (Ask your child what happens to the plant in the dark!) This month, we will be talking about the needs of animals and comparing them to plants.
First Grade
First graders are also learning about plants in Explorations. We call it our “museum of leafology!” Your child will be bringing home a model plant soon. Please ask your child to explain what each part of the plant does, showing you using their model! This is their first “exhibit” in their museum! Next, we will be learning about the many amazing ways that plants disperse their seeds.
Second Grade
Our second grade students are in a unit about matter called “Masters of Materials!” We have enjoyed testing different materials for properties such as hardness and absorbancy, and ranking the materials from best to worst. Ask your child what their favorite test was. Soon, we will put our knowledge to work and become engineers, designing and building a special structure!
Third Grade
Third graders have just completed a short engineering unit called “The Pet Problem.” The students were really into designing and building a model umbrella with their science team. Ask your child what the “pet problem” is, and how their umbrella did in the rain test! (If your child builds something at home, I would LOVE to share a photo with their class. Email me at Jeanine.Marano@ahschools.us with a photo of your student’s creation!) In October, we will be starting a very fun unit on motion and forces!

Be Informed, provide feedback on Budget Reduction and Realignment process
A number of factors converged in early 2024 that led to the need to reduce district expenditures by $26 million. Anoka-Hennepin acted quickly in the spring to plan a two-phased budget reduction and realignment process.
Phase 1: $5.1 million in central administration and services were reduced for the 2024-25 budget in an effort to mitigate the impact of additional cuts for the 2025-26 budget.
Phase 2: The district is currently determining a solution to address a $21 million budget reduction gap. Community meetings were held Sept. 25 - Oct. 10 in combination with a feedback process on two recommendations. A final decision is expected in November.
Factors impacting the district budget: The elimination of federal pandemic relief funds, higher than budgeted employee contract settlements, the impact of inflation on transportation and other operations, limited new revenue from state and federal sources and new requirements without funding support have developed a need to reduce expenditures by $26 million by the 2025-26 school year.
Proposed solutions: Anoka-Hennepin Schools have followed School Board direction to provide a reduction plan that cuts away from the classroom, particularly for the district’s youngest learners. The draft budget solution recommendations impact central services before schools with 53 percent of the reductions taking place at the district office/central services area, and 47 percent impact at the school level. The board is also studying a plan that would make additional central services and administrative cuts but spare reductions in schools allowing community members to decide on that impact through a levy referendum election in the fall of 2025.
Two options have been proposed for School Board consideration:
Option 1: $21 million total reduction.
Option 2: Make additional central services/administrative reductions and authorize an operating referendum election in the fall of 2025.
Looking ahead: Following robust community feedback for an initial draft plan, draft proposals are expected to be shared at the Monday, October 29 school board meeting and eventually adopted at the Monday, November 25 school board meeting. This timeline is required ahead of key planning decisions on student registration and staffing decisions prior to the 2025-26 school year.
Provide feedback: School Board expectations provide for a process that encourages robust community and staff input prior to approval of the final recommendation.
View the presentation from the September 23 school board meeting and provide your feedback for school board consideration using this online form.
Attend a community open house meeting: Feedback will be collected and provided to the School Board through a series of public open house meetings at area high schools in addition to the online feedback form.
Community Meeting #2: Tuesday, October 1 at Andover High School
Community Meeting #3: Wednesday, October 2 at Champlin Park High School
Community Meeting #4: Tuesday, October 8 at Blaine High School
Community Meeting #5: Wednesday, October 9 at Anoka High School
All sessions will run from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m, with a short presentation at 6:10 p.m. The community meeting that was held at Coon Rapids High School on Sept. 25 was live streamed and archived on the district YouTube channel. The same presentation will be given at the following four community meetings.
