ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Family Math & Reading Night
The elementary school hosted its annual Family Math & Reading Night on Thursday, November 7th. This year’s special guest was local author, Mr. Kevin McCloskey. Mr. McCloskey brought autographed copies of his most popular stories, We Dig Worms, Ants Don’t Wear Pants, Snails Are Just My Speed, and also put on a special show for families. The audience began by sitting to watch his famous, ‘Cranky Show,’ which consists of Mr. McCloskey’s illustrated set of pictures that are “played” through using a crank system. To match our “Creepy Crawly” theme, students also participated in a wide variety of activity stations throughout the evening, including: finger knit worms, caterpillar crafts, making “Bug Cootie Catchers,” math games, and more! Our fabulous PTO set up the Fall Book Fair for families to pick the perfect books for the fall and holiday season, and fun was had by all in attendance. We are already looking forward to next year!
MIDDLE SCHOOL
Election Day at OVMS
On November 4th and 5th, the eighth graders in Mrs. Nigrini’s American Foundations class welcomed the sixth and seventh graders to their classroom so they could participate in a mock Presidential election. Eighth graders spent time leading up to the election learning about the electoral college, the history of political parties, and the role of the Executive Branch. Student voters had a chance to sign in, pick up their ballot, and enter the voting booth to cast their vote for the candidate of their choice. The eighth graders also distributed historical facts about past Presidents to all the students who voted so the day became a learning opportunity, too. More than 300 ballots were cast and fun was had by all!
Veterans Day Celebration at OVMS
On November 11th, the students and staff of Oley Valley Middle School welcomed more than sixty veterans to our building to be recognized and celebrated for their honorable service to our country. Outstanding musical performances from the string ensemble (led by Mrs. Pennington), the 7th and 8th grade chorus (led by Mrs. Rothenberger) and the 6th grade band (led by Mrs. Powlus) set the tone for a wonderful morning! Veterans enjoyed a light breakfast in the cafeteria and were then directed to the auditorium for a student-led assembly. We welcomed Mrs. Jill Hardy, an American Gold Star Mother, who lost her son, Marine Cpl. Brandon M. Hardy, while serving his country in Iraq in 2006. Mrs. Hardy courageously shared her son’s story with us, and spoke about the bravery of our nation’s men and women in combat and the importance of supporting our nation’s military. Student Council members facilitated the assembly and recognized each of the veterans by name.
Each year, 8th grade students are invited to participate in a Veterans Day essay contest, sponsored by the Oley Chapter of the American Legion. This year’s topic was “Is the American Dream Still Relevant?” Local veterans recognized each of the top ten essay contest finalists, and the top three students received monetary prizes and had the opportunity to read their essay in front of the school. The ten finalists were: Reagan Andrews (1st place), Taylor Christman (2nd place), Joselyn Goje (3rd place), Adalene Himmelreich, Jackson Buckner, Grace Cushman, Matalyne Young, Leia Levush, Addison Mast, and Remi Rohrbach. Congratulations to these outstanding writers!
Career Day
HIGH SCHOOL
Indianapolis Bound
Oley Valley FFA made their way to Indianapolis this October for the FFA National Convention! We were proud to have a Food Science team consisting of four 2024 Oley graduates, Allison Riley, Robert Kowalski, Jacob Mowry, and Emily Seidel, compete in the Food Science competition. They did outstanding and were able to place 6th out of 38 teams in the National competition and earned an all-expense trip to the International Production and Processing Expo on January 27-30, 2025! We are so proud of all their hard work and wish them the best in their future careers!
We left the high school on October 22nd destined for Indianapolis on a Klein Charter Bus. Before we got there, we stopped at Ohio State University for a tour of their greenhouse facility. The tour was amazing, and we got to see how advanced their greenhouse really is! Our next stop was Indianapolis!
On the second day, we dropped our Food Science Team off at their competition before heading to the Indiana Convention Center. Members spent much of the day shopping at the Mega store, shopping mall, talking to colleges, and exploring the Career Expo Center. After the Food Science Team finished competing, we stopped for dinner before going back to the hotel for the night.
We started Thursday off early to head to Lucas Oil Stadium for the opening session of the 97th National FFA Convention. The Food Science Team then left to hear results on their competition as we walked back to the Indiana Convention Center to collect pins, stickers, shirts, and more goodies one last time. The chapter left the convention center a few hours later and went back to the hotel to get ready for the Indianapolis Zoo! Members had plenty of time to enjoy the different enclosures at the zoo and for some of us to get our faces painted. Thursday was a long and eventful day, but it was nothing compared to our adventure-filled day Friday.
Friday was our day to see all that Indianapolis had to offer. We started our day off strong by going to the world-renowned Indianapolis Speedway, where we were given an in-depth tour of the speedway's facilities and even the cars that have been driven on the track. Lots of members headed to the giftshop to purchase some speedway apparel. For lunch everyone was excited to go to Culver’s and get their famous custard! Members headed to Edinburg to take a tour of Not Just Popcorn. This was such an amazing tour where we learned everything about the business! They had so many different flavors to choose from and even had a special blue and gold FFA flavor! After our members bought all the popcorn they wanted, we went back to the hotel for an hour before ending our night off at Dave and Buster’s to have dinner and some fun at the arcade. Everyone had fun playing basketball, air hockey, bowling, and lots of other games. There was a Boot Barn right next to Dave and Busters, so a lot of members decided to head over and do some shopping.
Before we knew it, it was our final day in Indianapolis. That morning, we headed to Lucas Oil Stadium to watch Addy Arrowsmith receive her American FFA Degree, which is the highest degree a FFA member can earn. We are so proud of her for achieving such an amazing degree! It was then time for our long drive back to Oley.
All our FFA members had an amazing time at the FFA National Convention! It’s a once in a lifetime experience that is truly amazing to witness and be a part of. Hopefully we will have more members making the trip out to Indianapolis next year to represent our state and chapter in the National Competitions!
Journalism's Photojournalism Unit and Red Ribbon Week
Journalism CP spent the week learning the basics of photography and photojournalism. Then, applying the principles they learned, they photographed around the school, capturing different spirit days, teachers, and experiences from the Oley Valley. Equipped with press passes designed by the class, students practiced professionalism and subtlety in the field.

Featured Education Grant: Career Academy Remodel
The Career Academy Remodel for Workforce Skills and Pre-apprenticeship Education Grant aims to equip students with essential life skills and workforce training in a practical hospitality setting. Through hands-on learning, students jumped right in, working alongside teachers to unpack and build new cabinetry and shelving, gaining immediate experience. This remodeled space supports students' development of independent living skills, preparing them for pre-apprenticeships, internships and opportunities beyond high school.
Meet our 2024-2025 Student Representatives!
We’re thrilled to introduce two remarkable young leaders representing the student voice at OVCEF this year—Senior Samantha Wagner and Junior Morgan Melcher! These hard-working students join us at each monthly meeting, bringing a fresh perspective and valuable insights from their fellow classmates.
As Student Representatives, Samantha and Morgan bridge the gap between the students and OVCEF, keeping us in touch with the needs, interests, and feedback of their peers. Their participation in meetings allows them to provide invaluable input, ensuring that we remain closely aligned with the needs of Oley Valley students.
Samantha and Morgan aren’t just attending meetings—they’re actively involved in showcasing the impact of OVCEF in our community. They help us gather photos and testimonials from fellow students and teachers, sharing the real-life effects of the education grants we’ve funded. By doing so, they help tell the story of OVCEF’s mission and its impact on education in the Oley Valley School District.
We are so grateful for the hard work, dedication, and insight Samantha and Morgan bring to OVCEF. They’ve already proven to be invaluable members of our team, and we’re excited to continue working alongside them throughout this school year. Their involvement not only strengthens OVCEF’s connection to students but also inspires us to keep finding ways to support, enrich, and enhance the educational experience in our district.
Thank you, Samantha and Morgan, for being the voices of your classmates and helping us make a difference every day.
