Monthly Update on Specials Classes
Art with Ms. Kim
Artists have been learning about line and shape and color, exploring these elements of art through a variety of different materials and experiences.
- Kindergarten created an abstract collage using the primary colors, inspired by the work of artist Piet Mondrian, and is making abstract paintings using lines and shapes and painting with the primary colors.
- 1st Grade made paper weavings emphasizing their patterns with cut shapes, and is learning about primary and secondary colors, mixing their primary colors to create secondary colors on their color wheel and are turning those into snowflakes.
- 2nd Grade painted fall leaves inspired watercolor paintings, utilizing resist, wet-on-wet and salt techniques. Now we are looking at and discussing the artwork of Mexican American artist Carmen Lomas Garza and drawing a sketch of a tradition or experience they have had with their family, to turn into a mixed media collage.
- 3rd Grade created a mixed media collage, using a variety of different materials to represent ingredients in a creative, "silly" sandwich. Now we are mixing primary colors to create secondary and tertiary colors in a 12 section color wheel.
- 4th Grade is looking at and discussing the artwork of African American artist Romare Bearden and creating their own mixed media cityscape collage, inspired by his work "The Block."
- 5th Grade is looking at and discussing the artwork of British artist Shantell Martin and creating a black and white drawing, inspired by her work, that includes symbols and words representing who they are and what they like to do.

Kindergarten: Our youngest learners continue to explore the world through colors! We are reading books such as "Brown Bear Brown Bear, What Do You See?" 📖🐻 by Bill Martin, Jr. and “The Magical Skies of Sumpango" by Kimberly Matthis Pitts (Los Cielos Mágicos de Sumpango) in Spanish to talk about colors. Students have been learning about a kite festival in Guatemala and describing their colors in Spanish. We are also playing games and singing lots of songs to practice the colors.
First grade: In addition to describing school materials by color and size, students are also beginning to describe what we use school materials for, like coloring (colorear) and reading 📚 (leer). We have been acting out these actions in games like charades, and singing the song Vengan Ya and are getting ready to learn about the different parts of our school, such as the art room and music room.
Second grade: Students are learning to describe their schedules at school. Ask your child: What classes do you have in the morning? /¿Qué clases tienes por la mañana? And What classes do you have in the afternoon? /¿Qué clases tienes por la tarde?
Third grade: Now that we have finished learning about Ritchie Valens, in third grade we are starting to share similar information about ourselves. Students are learning about the months of the year and numbers to start talking about our birthdays and what they like to do.
Fourth grade: Students are learning to describe their personalities in Spanish and appreciating how unique and diverse we are! Students are learning how to use technology to record themselves in Spanish in preparation for our end of unit project.
Fifth grade: Fifth graders are continuing to practice describing themselves and others. The past couple of weeks we focused on birthdays: When is your birthday? /¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños? And How old are you? ¿Cuántos años tienes? We have also discussed different birthday traditions around the world!
